Bayern Munich 4 (7) vs. (1) 1 Chelsea Champions League Round of 16 2nd Leg Review

The 19/20 season comes to an end.

Chelsea lost to Bayern Munich in Munich on Saturday as many would have expected. Bayern fielded their strongest XI while Lampard also fielded a pretty decent team considering all the injuries. Caballero started in goal with a 4 man defence of Reece James, Christensen, Zouma, and Emerson. Kante played as the CDM while Kovacic and Barkley played further forward. Mount and Hudson-Odoi were the wingers with Tammy starting up front. I personally would have started Tomori, alongside Zouma and Loftus-Cheek instead of Barkley with Giroud starting up front.

The game began as expected as Bayern were all over Chelsea. The home team didn’t let the Londoners breathe as they pressed and kept a very high line. The first goal came in the 10th minute as Caballero fouled Lewandowski who broke through on goal. Lewandowski then stepped up and converted his penalty to make it 1-0. Perisic then made it 2-0 in the 24th minute as Kovacic was caught in possession and Perisic was on hand to convert the cross from Muller. Chelsea then began to grow into the game as we started to create changes and perhaps Bayern became complacent. We finally started to string passes together as Emerson had a shot saved by Neuer. Hudson-Odoi though he had scored a brilliant goal but it was ruled out by VAR as Tammy had been offside for the initial pass. We finally managed a goal right before half time as Emerson drilled in a low cross which was parried by Neuer into Tammy’s path who tapped the ball in.

Chelsea started the 2nd half brightly but failed to create any real chance in front of the Bayern goal. Sule and Coutinho were brought on for Bayern as they began to rest players. Tolisso and Odriozola followed as Chelsea began to tire. Tolisso then made it 3-1 in the 76th minute as a Lewandowski cross found him completely unmarked in the box and he headed it in. Giroud came on for Tammy late on and Lewandowski made it 4-1 in the 83rd minute as he headed in the Bayern cross. Final whistle blew and Chelsea’s misery came to an end as there was a clear gulf in quality between the two sides. The result itself isn’t the man thing everyone expected it and it will for sure be a learning curve for the younger players who were involved in this game.

Player Review

Caballero – Not much to do, conceded the penalty but other than that not at fault for most of the goals. Silver lining is that he will be back to being a backup goalkeeper next season.

Reece James – Solid performance from Reece James especially if one compares it to his time in the 1st leg. Managed the right hand side better than last time and also kept Davies at bay for large parts of the game. One of the few that can leave Munich with his head held high.

Christensen – A decent performance from Christensen and all I can say is that he isn’t the first defender I would sell if Chelsea are to buy a new one in the transfer window.

Zouma – Colossal at the back for Chelsea, if a cross or shot were being blocked or deflected it was probably by the Frenchman. I cant stress it enough but we cannot sell Zouma this summer. Just. Cant. Happen.

Emerson – For me Emerson was not bad considering that was his first start since the 21st of January when we played Arsenal. Odds are that’s the last we see of Emerson starting for Chelsea or even playing for us so I won’t criticise him.

Kante – Solid made several tackles throughout the game and gave it his best considering it was his first game back from injury. The break should now help him regain fitness.

Barkley – Ok I guess, didn’t really stand out and another player that I feel won’t be around at Chelsea next season and at best will be a substitute with Havertz hopefully joining the club soon.

Kovacic – Some brilliant dribbling moments but also at fault for the 2nd goal as it showed the good and bad of Kovacic. Might find game time hard to come by next season with Mount probably taking his place but still will be a solid squad option.

Hudson-Odoi – Probably the best Chelsea player on the pitch as he was unlucky to have a brilliant goal disallowed. I wanted CHO to show us why we need to keep faith in him and he did that and now hopefully he kicks on next season.

Mount – A quiet afternoon from Mount, I don’t think he likes playing out on the wings and his impact is for sure lessened on the flanks. Mount and Havertz is a partnership I will want to watch next season in Chelsea’s midfield.

Abraham – A decent afternoon for Tammy, physically he grew into the game although the amount of offsides he managed to get reminded me of Morata. Still managed the solitary goal of the game from Chelsea and ends the season with 18 goals in all competitions. A really good return for his first season as a regular Chelsea player.

Giroud – Little time to make any impact.

Next up for Chelsea are holidays as the squad and staff should be on vacation for a couple of weeks. The Premier League re starts in September and so taking in pre season we shouldn’t have to wait long to see Chelsea in action once again. The ball is now in Marina’s court as we need to sell the deadwood we have and sign the players we want, starting with Kai Havertz. COME ON  YOU BLUES!!!
