Midweek Football Preview
The tournaments continue!
Europa League Quarter-Finals
Shakhtar Donetsk vs. Basel
Shakhtar flew past Wolfsburg in the Round of 16 while Basel were too much for Frankfurt. The two teams are arguably under dogs for the competition and honestly the game could go either way. Evenly matched teams.
Wolverhampton vs. Sevilla
A good game between two good teams. Wolves edged out Olympiakos in the last round but put in a solid defensive performance while Sevilla played the one leg against Roma and were too good on the day. Wolves are the underdog in this game based on European pedigree but Sevilla are probably the kings of this competition and so will be favourites. A fun game between two teams in good form.
Champions League Quarter-Finals
Atalanta vs. Paris Saint Germain
The Champions League mini tournament in Lisbon starts on Wednesday as Atalanta take on PSG. Atalanta have been a revelation in Serie A this season as their free scoring team has caught everyone’s eye. Post lockdown Atalanta won 9 games, drew 3 and lost 1. They scored 28 goals in the process and managed to score 98 goals this season as they finished 3rd in Serie A. PSG didn’t return post lockdown as Ligue 1 was cancelled but they have played some cup finals and friendlies in the process. They have played 3 friendlies scoring 14 goals and conceding none while they won both two cups by beating St.Etienne 1-0 and Lyon on penalties. PSG will be without Mbappe and Di Maria for this game but Neymar and Icardi are around and they are always a threat. It should be a high scoring game and everyone would love to see Atalanta go through. It’s a one off tie and anything can happen.
RB Leipzig vs. Atletico Madrid
Quarter-final 2 will be played between Leipzig and Atletico as the two take on each other looking to reach the semis. Post lockdown Leipzig were in decent form as they won 4 games drew 5 and lost 1 as they finished 3rd in the Bundesliga. The drop off was drastic from Nagelsmann’s side who were actually in a title race before football resumed. Atletico Atletico actually did really well post lockdown as they won 7 games and drew 4 games. They went unbeaten as Simeone got a 3rd placed finish for his side and Atletico put in defensive masterclasses. Atletico would have to be favourites for this game given their experience in this competition but Leipzig have nothing to fear although they will be without one Timo Werner who has moved to Chelsea. A fun game but Atletico are favourites.
