Weekend Football Review

No surprises…

Champions League Round of 16 Leg 2

Man City 2 (4) vs. (2) 1 Real Madrid

Real Madrid had it all to do for this game but with Ramos missing Varane had one of his worst games for the team as City went through. Sterling scored in the 9th minute to give City the lead but Benzema equalised for Real Madrid in the 28th minute. Real grew into the game in the 2nd half but City held tight. City then got the lead again through Jesus in the 68th minute. City got the win as Real were dumped out. City have to be one of the favourites to win this years competition.

Juventus 2 (2) vs. (2) 1 Lyon

Juventus won on the day but Lyon’s away goal meant that the French side went into the quarter finals with Juventus dumped out. Depay scored a penalty in the 12th minute to give Lyon the lead and while Ronaldo got the lead for Juventus with a penalty and a brilliant long range effort in the 60th minute Juventus could not get that final goal. Juventus sacked Sarri on Sunday as Pirlo was appointed as the new manager. A bit harsh on the Italian but Sarri will get a club soon enough. Lyon go into the next round although they are for sure underdogs.

Barcelona 3 (4) vs. (2) 1 Napoli

The first leg ended with a 1-1 draw and based on current form it felt like Napoli had a chance but Barcelona stepped up for this game. Lenglet, Messi, and Suarez scored in the first half to give Barcelona a 3-0 lead while Insigne got one back for Napoli via penalty in right before half time as well. The 2nd half saw no goals as Barcelona went through into the quarters and Napoli fell out. Barcelona as a collective are underdogs for this years competition but they have Messi.

Europa League Quarter-Finals

Inter Milan 2 vs. 1 Leverkusen

The first quarter final was an entertaining one as there was plenty of goals, close efforts and ruled out penalties. Barella gave Inter the lead in the 15th minute after some good hold up play in the box by Lukaku. Lukaku then doubled Inter’s lead in the 21st minute after again holding the ball up in the box and slotting it past the goalkeeper. Inter could have easily had 4 before Leverkusen got one back through Havertz in the 24th minute. The German smashed the ball past Handanovic after a good 1-2. Leverkusen could not get the equalising goal though as Inter had two penalties ruled out by VAR. Inter go on to the semi-finals while Leverkusen drop out.

Man United 1 vs. 0 Copenhagen

Fernandes scored a penalty in the 95th minute after Martial expertly dived in the box to reach the semi-finals. Copenhagen played really well throughout the game and took the game to extra time as their goalkeeper Johnsson was brilliant making 13 saves throughout the game. United were always going to win although doing it through a penalty was sad. 21 penalties to their name this season shows how reliant they are on the referee. United reach the semis and Copenhagen bow out but can be proud.
