Weekend Football Preview

We are back for the 20/21 season after a couple weeks off!!!

Premier League MW 1

Fulham vs. Arsenal

The first game of the new season comes to us in the form of a London Derby as promoted Fulham take on Community Shield winners Arsenal. Fulham had a dismal season the last time they were in the Premier League but bounced back after winning the play offs during the summer. Arsenal had a great end to last season and Arteta is looking to build on his defensive football with by sealing a place in top 6 this season. Fulham have the likes of Mitrovic still around but Arsenal have brought in Willian along with defensive reinforcements of Saliba and Gabriel. David Luiz looks like he will miss the game but Arsenal should have enough to beat Fulham especially with Aubameyang on the pitch.

Crystal Palace vs. Southampton

Palace have made some exciting signings this season with Eze and Michy Batshuayi coming in. Eze joins from QPR and Michy is on loan from Chelsea. Southampton have brought in defensive players with Walker-Peters and Salisu coming in. This could be a close game although Southampton were the team in better form at the end of the season. Palace though have been firing in their pre-season friendlies and there attack looks better at the moment with Zaha in form. This game will most likely be a draw but Southampton could edge it.

Liverpool vs. Leeds

The Champions begin their defence against Championship Champions Leeds United as the historic club finally returns to the Premier League after more than a decade out. Liverpool have a fit squad to select from but other than Tsimikas who is a backup left back to Robertson the Champions have not bought anyone this window. Leeds have been more active having brought in Rodrigo from Valencia, Koch, Harrisson, Costa amongst others. Bielsa is the legendary manager leading them and it will be interesting to see how is high pressing attacking principles fair in a league where you have to be adaptable to survive. Norwich stuck to their philosophy and went down. Liverpool should win but I have a feeling Leeds will get something out of this game.

West Ham vs. Newcastle

West Ham take on a Newcastle team who have for all accounts had an uncharacteristically good window. Newcastle have brought in Wilson, Fraser, and Lewis along with Jeff Hendrick as well. West Ham on the other hand have only brought in Soucek on a permanent and there are several problems behind the scenes at the club. Newcastle should win this game.

West Brom vs. Leicester

Promoted team West Brom under the leadership of Bilic take on Brendan Rodgers Leicester who are looking to start the season like last season. West Brom have been fairly active bringing in Pereira, Kipre, Diangana, and Robinson. Leicester have sold Ben Chilwell but brought in Castagne to replace him. Bilic is the reason I give West Brom some hope of taking points off of Leicester but Leicester on paper should win this game.

Tottenham vs. Everton

A massive game on Sunday night as Mourinho looks to get Tottenham back in the groove with Ancelotti’s big spending Everton visiting town. That is a sentence I never thought I would type. The two teams have made some smart transfers this season but Everton have the eye catching one with James Rodriguez playing under Ancelotti. This should be a very interesting game but it could be quite defensive as Mourinho sits back and counters. A draw is the most likely scenario but Everton could edge it.

Sheffield United vs. Wolverhampton

Last season’s over achievers take each other on as Sheffield welcome Wolves. Sheffield have done some fine business over the last week while Wolves have brought in their customary Portuguese talent. This should be a quite defensive affair and it has a draw written all over it.

La Liga MW 1

La Liga is back but most of the big teams are still on a break having played European football after last season finished. Valencia take on Levante while Villarreal take on Huesca and Real Sociedad travel to Real Valladolid.

DFB Pokal First Round

The Bundesliga has not kicked off yet but the DFB Pokal is back as Monchengladbach travel to play Oberneuland, Leipzig travel to play Nurnberg, Dortmund travel to Duisburg, and Bayern travel to Duren amongst other teams. Straight forward wins for all mentioned.

Ligue MW 3

PSG lost to Lens in their first game back as they played MW 2 yesterday. Lyon travel to Bordeaux, Lille take on Metz, Monaco welcome Nantes, and PSG play Marseille, as the Champions look to bounce back against tough opponents. PSG are without Neymar and Mbappe who both have corona virus.
