We are back!
Chelsea play Brighton on Monday night as we begin our 20/21 campaign. The season only ended around a month ago and it’s been an eventful few weeks for Chelsea fans with plenty of new and exciting players coming in. Brighton themselves have been busy in the window as well bringing in Lallana, Veltman, and Ben White who returns on a loan from Leeds. Graham Potter’s side will be hoping to build on their 15th placed finish season last season while continuing to play their attacking football.
Frank Lampard has had little time to work with his full squad for next season and even now some players are missing with Thiago Silva only joining the squad over the weekend and Ziyech, and Chilwell out through injury. The Brighton friendly was the only pre-season fixture Chelsea played and it was a good gauge of what was to come albeit with several players who probably won’t feature heavily. There was still stuff to be excited about especially going forward with Werner, CHO, and Ziyech switching positions in a fluid manner and causing Brightons several problems. The defence still remains a problem for Chelsea but there are reinforcements while Kante is now back fit for the new season.
Brighton Team Preview
Potter has a fit squad to select from. The likes of Ben White, Dunk, Maupay, Lallana, Trossard, Bissouma, Lamptey etc are all available to be in the starting XI. The friendly showed that Brighton are more solid defensively and on the counter they can still cause some problems. They like to play out from the back and Potter does try to play an expansive open form of football.
Chelsea Team Preview
Lampard will be without Kovacic who is suspended, Thiago Silva who has only just joined the squad, Chilwell and Ziyech who are both injured. Pulisic and Azpilicueta are back fully fit which is a massive boost for the team. Havertz is also available having had a week of training with the squad. I expect Lampard to select a 4-3-3, for this game. Kepa should start in goal with Reece James and Azpilicueta as the full backs. I expect Zouma, and Christensen to start as the centre backs while Kante should start in the CDM position. Mount and Havertz should start as the attacking 8’s with Pulisic and Hudson-Odoi on the wings, Werner should start up front. There are though several ways in which Lampard can tweak the formation Werner could start on the wing with Tammy up front or Havertz could start on the wing with Jorginho in the CDM position. I think the latter is probably the most likely scenario with Pulisic featuring off the bench having just returned to training this week. Either way an exciting starting XI is expected.
Starting XI Prediction
It’s important for Chelsea to start the season on a positive note and given the quality available in the starting XI and the bench I expect Chelsea to win. COME ON YOU BLUES!!!
