Got the job done!
Chelsea took on Brighton for the final game of MW 1 and while the performance was understandably disjointed Chelsea got the job done. Brighton’s lineup was as predicted with the likes of Lamptey, White, Lallana, Maupay etc all starting in a 3-5-2. Lampard started with a 4-2-3-1 of sorts with some interesting starters. Kepa started in goal, Reece James and Marcos Alonso started as the full backs with Christensen and Zouma in defence. Jorginho and Kante started as the two while Havertz and Mount started on the wings with Loftus-Cheek playing behind Werner. Interesting was the word many fans had in their heads.
The game started with Brighton the better side as they looked more organised and warmed up for the start of the season. Chelsea looked a little lost with the new formation as the likes of Lamptey caused havoc for Chelsea with Alonso in shock. Chelsea had some good moments though but it was a bit of fortune that led to the first goal. Alzate misplaced a pass that Jorginho found out and fed to Werner who sprinted and dribbled it past Ryan who knocked Werner down in the box. Up stepped Jorginho who in HIS trade mark style gave Chelsea the lead. The goal opened up the game and Werner made some brilliant runs with Havertz finding him once while RLC missed a good pass to the German.
The 2nd half started in similar fashion with Brighton the better team and they got their equaliser in the 54th minute as Trossard shot from range and Kepa similar to last season let the shot in. Reece James though went right down the other end and smashed a thunderous shot from outside the box to make it 1-2. 10 minutes later Reece James’s corner found Zouma who’s deflected shot made it 1-3. Chelsea made some subs and the Blues saw out the game for 3 points.
Kepa – Kepa did try to seem better as he came out to claim some crosses and made some punches. Kepa also made a good save but the conceded goal was very poor and won’t do him any favours especially with Mendy inbound.
Reece James – Man of the match performance from Reece as he got a goal and assist to add to a solid performance down the right. A very good start for hopefully a great season for our right back.
Christensen – Solid performance from the Dane as he continued his form from his international games. Made some brilliant interceptions and read the game brilliantly.
Zouma – Another solid performance by Zouma and a goal to add to his name. It’s a straight shootout between Christensen and him to see who plays alongside Thiago Silva and hopefully both learn from the legendary Brazilian.
Alonso – Not the best game as Lamptey’s pace was a problem for him all game, Ben Chilwell needed.
Jorginho – Good game from the Italian as he played the passes in the midfield well and made the pass which led to the penalty as well as converting it. Question marks over his future but professional as always.
Kante – Looking fitter and that is a big positive, began to grow into the game towards the 2nd half and if he stays fit it could be another influential season from the Frenchman.
Mount – Silent game, some good moments but did the basics well. There were some good passes to Werner and Havertz but the chemistry will only get better.
Loftus-Cheek – Probably the worst player on the pitch and that’s just taking this game into isolation. The ability that we know Ruben has was far from his performance last night as he just looked hesitant. Final passes were missing on several occasions and he failed to dribble past several players when we know he can do that. Hesitant seems the key word with Ruben just looks like something mentally is blocking him from going full throttle. Early days no need to panic, but not a good game.
Havertz – Silent debut, and thats justified having had only 4 days with squad and this really being his first game of the season. Havertz was also played in an unlikely position on the right and when Ziyech etc are available he will play more centrally. Some good moments offensively and his recovery tackle after losing the ball showed great determination. Much much more to come.
Werner – Good debut from the German and on another day could have had 2 goals if the final passes were made by RLC and Barkley. Timo’s pace and runs in behind the line were a constant threat and he was all over the opposition half for much of the game. The pace was key factor for the penalty and there is plenty to be excited about.
Barkley – Barkley made a difference when he came on the pitch and he did well to link up play. Barkley is a good squad player but imagine what he can do in a team where he starts… I’m looking at you West Ham.
Hudson-Odoi – Arguably should have started the game but had little time to make any real impact. Chances will come for Callum though, still very young.
Azpilicueta – Came on in the final minutes for Jorginho as Reece James switched to midfield. Very little time but good to see Azpi back.
Not our best performance by far and Brighton were arguably the better team but getting the job done was something that was missing last season. Silva, Pulisic, Chilwell, Ziyech, probably Mendy all missing from the first team and so nothing to be worried about. The key was a win and we got that, COME ON YOU BLUES!!!
