Tottenham vs. Chelsea Carabao Cup Round of 16 Preview

Master vs. Student Round 3!

Chelsea and Lampard visit Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Tuesday night as they take on Spurs and Mourinho in the Carabao Cup Round of 16. Tottenham were supposed to play Leyton Orient in the last round but several Covid cases in the Leyton camp meant that the game was called off and Tottenham went through by default. Tottenham have endured a tough start to the season playing around 3 games per week since they are involved in Europa League qualification as well. Spurs will travel entertain Maccabi Haifa on Thursday night for a place in the group stages and so focus will also be on that game. Spurs lost to Everton, beat Southampton, and drew against Newcastle so their league form has been similar to Chelsea’s. Mourinho has even got Levy to open the wallet after many years as they brought in Hodjberg, Doherty, Reguilon, and one Gareth Bale with business still not done. Pre match Mourinho has said that he would like to focus on the cup but can’t with the Europa League right around the corner although he will want to get one over Lampard who beat him twice last season.

Lampard and Chelsea endured a tough time against West Brom on Saturday and one which was of their own making. Those 3 errors were costly in the grand scheme of things but the comeback in the 2nd half was also a positive to take away from the game. The win against Barnsley was a good warm up game for the team which saw Havertz get his account running in Chelsea blue. The deep defence of West Brom meant that Werner couldn’t open his account but Havertz was still lively as he got an assist for Hudson-Odoi’s goal. At the moment Lampard needs to decide between a 4-3-3, or a 4-2-3-1 as he searches for the ideal formation but regardless the games against Liverpool and West Brom were tactically better than against Brighton. The team selection though has been an issue although I doubt Alonso starts another game for Chelsea. We all know how Mourinho will set up as he will no doubt want to counter Chelsea with pace and it will be up to Lampard and team to break down the Spurs defence.

Tottenham Team Preview

Tottenham are without Son for this game as he suffered a hamstring injury while Bale is still out for a few weeks as he recovers fitness. Reguilon might make his debut for the club which will only give Reece James competition with the Spaniard being a very good young left back. Kane has been in top form this season alongside Son but with the Korean out the goal scoring will fall largely on him. One can expect rotation from Mourinho with Hart, Bergwijn, Lamela, Alderwiereld among others probably set to start. Dele Alli is also around but there are rumours he is set to leave Spurs this week.

Chelsea Team Preview

This game comes to soon for Pulisic and Ziyech although Ziyech was seen in training. Mendy and Chilwell are available for selection along with the rest of the squad. I expect Mendy to make his debut for Chelsea in this game with Azpilicueta starting at right back and Chilwell starting at left back. I expect Silva to start alongside Zouma for this game to handle Kane. Kante should start as the CDM with Havertz and Kovacic starting ahead of him. I expect Werner to start at left wing and Giroud to start up front with Hudson-Odoi to start at right wing. Mount should get a rest. Lampard has said that RLC might leave on loan, and that is why I haven’t selected him.

Starting XI Prediction

A very interesting game for sure and even though the lineup’s might rotated the rivalry won’t be any less tense. Tottenham vs Chelsea is always a thriller and Chelsea will need to be quick and clinical with their chances as I expect us to have a lot of the ball. No silly mistakes and Chelsea should go through, COME ON YOU BLUES!!!
