Chelsea took on Tottenham in the Carabao Cup Round of 16 and lost on penalties to Mourinho’s side as Mason Mount missed the decisive one at the end. Lampard selected a strong lineup with some interesting changes as Mendy started his first game for Chelsea with Azpilicueta and Ben Chilwell starting as the full backs. Tomori and Zouma started as the centre backs with a midfield of Jorginho, Kovacic, and Mount. Werner and Hudson-Odoi started on the wings with Giroud up front. The lineup was very positive especially given the fact that Mourinho fielded a 5-4-1 formation with no number 9.
For much of the 1st half it was all Chelsea as we dominated possession and pinned Spurs to their own half. For all that possession though we didn’t create many chances until the 1st goal in the 19th minute as Azpilicueta cut back a pass into the box which found Werner and the German smashed home to give Chelsea the lead and get his first goal for the club. The rest of the half went by with no real clear cut chance Mendy did have to make a save but it was comfortably dealt with by the goalkeeper. Callum also missed a good opportunity before the 1st goal but his shot went straight to Lloris. All the possession but only one goal to show for it.
The 2nd half saw Spurs start as the better team as they decided to attack for once. Reguilon was denied by Mendy who made a very good save from a powerful shot. The shift to a back four from Spurs also allowed Chelsea some joy as we began to find space. Werner had a good shot saved by Lloris, followed by a good chance from Callum who was through on goal but his shot went over the bar. Mount also had a great 2 v 1 chance to let Werner through on goal but his final pass was poor. All these missed chances came back to bit us in the 83rd minute as Reguilon found Lamela at the back post and he tapped in an equaliser. The rest of the remaining minutes saw Spurs sit back and defend to take the game to penalties. Spurs and Chelsea scored 4 out of 4 penalties each before Kane stepped up to make it 5 for Spurs. Werner would normally have taken the 5th penalty but he was apparently suffering from cramp and so Mount stepped up whose shot went wide and Spurs went through.
Mendy – Very solid debut from our new goalkeeper. Mendy was commanding in the box and it was nice to see someone who could catch high balls. The goal wasn’t his fault and Chelsea look better at the back with him. Mendy’s distribution was also quite decent.
Azpilicueta – A normal Azpi performance reliable defensively and got the assist for Werner’s goal. Reguilon didn’t pose the Veteran too many problems although as the game went on the youngster found more space.
Tomori – A solid game from Tomori nothing eye catching but defended well as a pair with Zouma.
Zouma – The rock at the back as usual, his last ditch tackle on Fernandes was typical Zouma and he dominated the box.
Chilwell – A solid debut from the left back as for 60 minutes he looked quite decent albeit rusty.
Jorginho – The Italian distributed the ball well but other than that going forward he made no real impact.
Kovacic – A good game from Kovacic, he beat the press and dribbled forward as usual but when faced by opposition defenders he chose to pass sideways more often than nought.
Mount – Started his 5th game in a row which probably isn’t healthy selection from Lampard. Mount looked tired as the game went on but got into a great position to send Werner through on goal and scuffed the pass. The penalty miss isn’t really on him, penalties are a lottery.
Hudson-Odoi – Decent from Hudson-Odoi, Callum could have easily had a goal or two yesterday but his finishing was not up to task. Other than that though the impact only really started once Spurs opened up.
Werner – Werner I feel is waisted on the wings at the moment mostly because he tends to tuck in to the striker and it limits his impact. Werner needs to stay within the box so that he can receive balls and finish. The finish was very good and he will only get better.
Giroud – Giroud works best when players play close to him and Mount was too far off from the Frenchman to create any impact while Werner also found it tough to get close to Giroud.
Emerson – Decent but he was at fault for the Spurs goal as he failed to mark Lamela at the back post.
Kante – Solid when he came on and actually posed an attacking threat going forward from the deep midfield positions.
Abraham – Good but needs to build his chemistry with Werner etc.
Lampard – The team selection from Lampard was spot on for this game and we should have finished the game in the 1st half with all the possession we had. The only flaw is that maybe Mount should have come off for Havertz as we entered the 2nd half just to seal the game but he chose to keep Mount on. Lampard is still to have Ziyech and Pulisic available and they will only help Chelsea’s attack click. Lampard will improve with this squad and until then its unfair to judge him on a Carabao Cup game.
Next up for Chelsea is a visit from Crystal Palace on Saturday, COME ON YOU BLUES!!!
