Perfect way to enter a break!
Chelesa took on fellow London team Crystal Palace in MW 4 of the Premier League as the Blues looked to head into the international break with a good win and 3 points on the board. Palace headed into this game above Chelsea and came to Stamford Bridge with their standard two banks of four with pacy wingers and forwards to counter at pace. Lampard selected a lineup that pleased everyone as Mendy started in goal with Azpilicueta, Silva, Zouma, and Chilwell as the defenders. Kante and Jorginho started as the pivot with Havertz in the CAM position flanked by Werner and Hudson-Odoi. Tammy Abraham started up front. A strong lineup, and the Azpilicueta selected with Palace’s threat with counters in mind.
The first 20 minutes were all Chelsea as we kept possession and shifted the ball around but Palace stood firm at the back as our pressing meant that the Palace counter’s were stopped at the source. The final 20 minutes saw Palace grow into the game as they began to enter the Chelsea half as well but Mendy was left without a save to make in the 1st half and Chelsea themselves barely threatened Guaita’s goal. The first half ended with no goals but Chelsea having had most of the possession albeit having to be patient with it.
Chelsea came out for the 2nd half with more urgency in their attack as Chilwell began to use the width more and Hudson-Odoi began to take on defenders. The first goal came in the 50th minute after a ball into the box fell to Chilwell who volleyed Chelsea into the lead with that perfect left foot of his. Chelsea then began to create chances as Guaita was forced into some good saves. The 2nd goal came in the 66th minute as Chilwell’s cross came into the box and Zouma rose highest for a brilliant header. The 3rd goal came thanks to some good play by CHO down the right as he beat his man and his cross was headed out but it fell to Tammy who turned in the box and was tripped by Mitchell. Jorginho stepped up and made it 3-0 in the 78th minute. The final goal came in the 82nd minute as Havertz was brought down by Sakho and Jorginho once again stepped up to seal the deal. With 4 goals up Pulisic, and Kovacic were brought in to get some minutes and see out the win.
Mendy – A first cleansheet for our new goalkeeper on a day where he didn’t have much to do. Mendy did make the save when called upon but it was a day where he didn’t need to worry due to the defence ahead of him.
Azpilicueta – A solid display from our captain as he alongside Silva in defence led the defence well. Azpi proved his leadership when Tammy wanted to take the 2nd penalty and he took the ball and gave it to Jorginho because that’s the rule.
Silva – A brilliant display by Thiago Silva as alongside Zouma they showed a solidity and confidence in defence that was missing in the last few games. A true veteran’s display.
Zouma – Got another goal to his name and probably could have had one more. Zouma is growing as a defender and he is looking to perform a brilliant partnership alongside Thiago Silva.
Chilwell – Man of the match display from Chilwell in first Premier League start. A goal and an assist to add to a solid defensive performance as well. Chilwell provided that attacking width from the flank and his left foot was another good quality that was missing. A good start to what is hopefully a great time at Chelsea.
Kante – Marauded the midfield as usual as he made tackles and broke up play as usual. Typical Kante performance.
Jorginho – Jorginho brought his defensive game yesterday as he intercepted passes and played some brilliant balls forward. Two goals to his name as well which takes it to 3 for the season.
Hudson-Odoi – A good 2nd half from Hudson-Odoi, he needs to be more offensive minded and when he started to take on his defenders he started to make an impact.
Havertz – Got the 4th goal’s foul and overall was solid in his CAM position. Glided along the opposition half as he picked up players drove forward and created some brilliant opportunities. Effortless.
Werner – Werner’s still looking for his 1st Premier League goal but without a doubt it will come, followed by many many more. As a winger Werner is put on the fringe of play as he likes to play more central and closer to the box. Once Ziyech and Pulisic are back Werner should start playing in his favoured forward position.
Abraham – Could have had a goal or two but a good display in which Tammy worked hard for the team up top. Slightly childish to want to take the 2nd penalty with Jorginho on the pitch but that deal was sorted after the game. A good outing.
Pulisic – Only really got 10 minutes on the pitch but it was like someone had let a firecracker go off. Pulisic looked hungry to play and show that he should be starting the next game and he also managed to get a shot off. Good to see him back.
Kovacic – Not much time to make an impact as he came on for Kante.
Lampard – A good game for Lampard after his tactics were questioned in the last few games. A clean sheet as well and 4 goals means that Lampard has something to build on going forward.
A good win heading into the International break which is needless but has to be played. Ziyech still missing but will be back in a fortnight and Pulisic should be even more fit. The Champions League also returns after the break and so our true squad strength will be tested. Now we just need our players to return back without any problems and we can keep on going. COME ON YOU BLUES!!!
