Chelsea take on 11th placed Southampton in MW 5 of the Premier League season as Lampard and co look to continue climbing up the table. Southampton endured a tough start to the season as they lost their first two games to Palace and Tottenham. These losses were followed up by wins against Burnley and West Brom who are essentially at the bottom of the table right now. Southampton have made Walker-Peters a permanent player while Salisu, Diallo also joined the club. Theo Walcott made a deadline day move to Saint Mary’s as he rejoined his boyhood club. Other than that Hassenhutl has stuck to a team he knows best and got very good results out of last season. Southampton are tipped to finish in the top 10 or at least fight for it this season and after a poor start they look raring to go.
Chelsea have had a mixed start to the season with 2 wins a draw and a loss. Each game has context though with the loss coming against Liverpool with 10 men and the draw coming against West Brom having been 3 goals down. We went into the international break with a comfortable win against Palace on a day when we performed well defensively and took our chances in the 2nd half while being patient. Lampard is only now getting work with a full squad even then there is always someone messing due to some injury or the other. We did see the 4-2-3-1 used against Palace and I expect this to continue against Southampton as well, as it offers a solid base through which our forward players can launch attacks from.
Chelsea Team Preview
Chelsea will be without Mendy who has a slight knock from international duty and Thiago Silva who only just returned to training from Brazil a day ago. Pulisic is now fully fit and could start while Lampard has also said that Ziyech is now able to feature from the bench having had some minutes with Morocco. I expect Kepa to start in goal having had a decent international break with Spain while Chilwell should start at left back and Azpilicueta at right back. Reece James could start but having only returned on Thursday and Sevilla midweek I dont expect it. Christensen and Zouma should be our centre backs with Jorginho and Kovacic in the pivot. I dont expect Kante to start having also picked up a niggle with France. Pulisic, Havertz and Hudson-Odoi should start behind Werner. Tammy could start having had two weeks of rest but I with Pulisic fit I would want to see Werner played in his position.
Southampton Team Preview
Theo Walcott could feature for Southampton having had two weeks of training while Armstrong and Djenepo are out. Walker-Peters and Bertrand are adept from the wings while Ings and Che Adams are always a handful. One can expect Walcott to start with Armstrong out and Ward-Prowse is always a lively character in midfield.
Starting XI Prediction
Southampton are a tricky team to play against but we have the quality back for a win. Club football is back, COME ON YOU BLUES!!!
