Midweek Football Preview

Champions League and Europa League are back!!

Champions League Group Stage MD 1

Zenit vs. Club Brugge (Group F)

Zenit are 11 games into the Russian season and sit top of their league with 24 points having won 7 drawn 3 and lost 1. Brugge are 9 games into the Belgian season and sit top of their league as well having won 6 drawn 1 and lost 2. Two teams in similar form at the moment which is quiet hard to call. This should be an interesting game.

Dynamo Kyiv vs. Juventus (Group G)

Kyiv have played 6 games in the Ukranian League this season as they sit top of the table having won 4 and drawn 2. Juventus having played 4 games in Serie A sit 5th with 2 wins and 2 draws as they start their season in shaky fashion under Pirlo. Juventus should have enough fire power to get a win in Kyiv though especially with no fans around.

RB Leipzig vs. Istanbul Basaksehir (Group H)

Leipzig have played 4 games in the Bundesliga and sit top of the table with 3 wins and a draw. Turkish Champions Istanbul have had a terrible start to the season having played 5 games, they sit 19th with 1 win 1 draw and 3 losses. Leipzig should easily win this game with Istanbul standing no real chance in their group in what is their debut European campaign.

Rennes vs. Krasnodar (Group E)

Rennes having played 7 games in Ligue 1 sit 3rd in the league with 4 wins and 3 draws. Krasnodar sit 7th in the Russian League with 5 wins 3 draws and 3 losses. Rennes are clearly the better team in better form and given their progression over the last few seasons they should record a win against Krasnodar.

Lazio vs. Dortmund (Group F)

Lazio sit 14th in Serie A having had a poor start to the season, 4 games in they have won 1 drawn 1 and lost 2. Dortmund sit 3rd in the Bundesliga having played 4 games won 3 and lost 1. Lazio might have had a poor start but they have plenty of quality in the team while Dortmund have all the quality as well. It should be an entertaining game in what is a tough group.

Paris Saint Germain vs. Man United (Group H)

PSG sit 2nd in Ligue 1 after 7 games, they had a shaky start to the season as they lost 2 in a row but have won 5 since and look back to their usual best. Man United sit 14th in the Premier League having won 2 and lost 2 with it being a generally poor season for Ole and team. They did manage to beat Newcastle at the weekend but PSG is totally different opposition. PSG will want to take revenge for when these two clubs met the last time and so this should be an entertaining game.

Barcelona vs. Ferencvaros (Group G)

Barcelona sit 9th in La Liga after 4 games having won 2 drawn 1 and lost 1. Ferencvaros have played 5 games in the Hungarian League and sit top of the table having won 4 and drawn 1. Barcelona should usually be shoe ins for a win here and they probably will win but if Ferencvaros ever wanted to play Barcelona then now would be the perfect time. Barcelona should win but there could be a surprise result.

RB Salzburg vs. Lokomotiv Moskva (Group A)

Salzburg sit top of the Austrain League after 4 games having won all 4 while Lokomotiv sit 4th in Russia having won 6 drawn 3 and lost 2. This should be an interesting game between two evenly matched teams that can go either way although one would think these two teams will be fighting it out for 3rd in this group.

Real Madrid vs. Shakhtar (Group B)

Real Madrid sit 3rd in La Liga having won 3 drawn 1 and lost 1, while Shakhtar sit 3rd in the Ukranian League having won 3 and drawn 3. Real Madrid have the quality to win this game and should win this game but given the way seasons have started their could be a surprise result.

Ajax vs. Liverpool (Group D)

Ajax sit 2nd in the Eredivisie after 5 games having won 4 and lost 1 while Liverpool sit 3rd in the Premier League having won 3 drawn 1 and lost 1. Ajax have had a shaky start but look to be on their way while Liverpool have been part of a Premier League season that has been all over the place. The latest blow to the reigning champions has come in the form of a season ending injury to Van Dijk and so there is much to analyse and work on. This should be an interesting game that can go either way.

Man City vs. Porto (Group C)

Man City sit 10th in the Premier League having played 4 games won 2 drawn 1 and lost 1. Porto sit 2nd in the Portuguese League, the side started the season well having won 2 games but have since lost and drawn 1 each. City should have enough fire power to win this game and get their Champions League season rolling but it will be tricky.

Midtjylland vs. Atalanta (Group D)

Midtjylland sit 5th in the Danish league after 5 games having won 3 drawn 1 and lost 1. Atalanta sit 3rd in Serie A having played 4 won 3 and lost 1 as they continue being their high scoring blockbuster selfs. Atalanta should win this game given how good they have been over the last few seasons.

Olympiacos vs. Marseille (Group C)

Olympiacos sit 2nd in the Greek League having played 4 games won 3 and drawn 1 while Marseille sit 6th in Ligue 1 having won 3 drawn 3 and lost 1. Olympiacos clearly the team in better form but both teams are evenly matched. I feel like the result could go either way.

Bayern Munich vs. Atletico Madrid (Group A)

Bayern sit 2nd in the Bundesliga after 4 games having won 3 and lost 1 while Atletico sit 8th in La Liga after 4 games having won 2 and drawn 2. It has been shaky starts for both teams in their domestic leagues but both of these teams should be the ones to qualify from this group and so it will be a close game.

Inter Milan vs. Monchengladbach (Group B)

Inter sit 6th in Serie A after 4 games having won 2 drawn 1 and lost 1. Monchengladbach sit 11th in the Bundesliga having won 1 drawn 2 and lost 1. Two teams struggling a bit at the moment but Inter probably have more quality going into this game. It’s important for Conte to start with a win in a group that is a tough one. Inter should win but it will be close.

Europa League Group Stage MD 1

Rapid Wien vs. Arsenal (Group B)

Rapid Wien sit 2nd in the Austrian League having won 3 and drawn 1 while Arsenal sit 5th in the Premier League having won 3 and lost 2. Arsenal should be reaching the Round of 32 without any issues and this should be a routine win for them.

Celtic vs. Milan (Group H)

Celtic sit 2nd in the Scottish League having won 8 drawn 1 and lost 1 as they take on AC Milan who sit top of Serie A having won all 4 of their games. Milan look resurgent but sit in a tricky group and so they will have to brng their A game to make the knockout stages.

Tottenham vs. LASK (Group J)

Tottenham have a straight forward group to qualify from as they sit 6th in the Premier League having won 2 drawn 2 and lost 1. Lask sit 5th in the Austrian League having won 2 drawn 1 and lost 1. Straight forward win for Tottenham expected and an easy group as well.

Leicester vs. Zorya (Group G)

Leicester sit 4th in the Premier League having won 3 and lost 2 as they take on Zorya Luhansk who sit 9th in the Ukrainian League having won 1 drawn 3 and lost 2. Leicester should win this game but it is a tricky group and they will have to be on their toes to progress from it.
