Chelsea vs. Rennes Champions League Group Stage MD 3 Preview

Keep on moving!

Chelsea welcome French side Rennes to Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night for MD 3 of the Champions League group stage. Rennes sit bottom of the group on goal difference having drawn their first game and lost to Sevilla last week. Rennes finished in the top four of Ligue 1 when it is called off earlier this year due to Covid, and since it didn’t resume they found themselves in the Champions League. That’s not to say Rennes are a poor team, they currently find themselves 3rd in Ligue 1 with 5 wins 3 draws and 1 loss. They have won only one of their last 4 games though. Rennes also happen to be the club that Edouard Mendy joined us from so he will have a chance to face off against his former employers.

Chelsea go into this game sitting top of the group after that good win against Krasnodar in Russia last week. Chelsea have since gone on to win against Burnley at Turf Moor in what was another dominant performance and perhaps the first one that saw Chelsea work as a team this season from top to bottom. The key for Lampard in this game will be to continue building that momentum and creating the partnerships that will thrive going forward but also giving some players rest if need be.

Chelsea Team Preview

Chelsea will be without Pulisic who suffered a minor hamstring niggle warming up against Burnley but he should be back soon. Mendy should start in goal with Azpilicueta at right back and Christensen and Tomori as the centre backs while Emerson starts as the left back. Kovacic and Jorginho could come back in a pivot as we don’t have an outright replacement for Havertz, and Mount. I expect Hudson-Odoi to start as the left winger and Mount to start in a 10 position with Ziyech down the right. Giroud should start up front. The Frenchman has been waiting to start a game and I feel Rennes is a good chance for him especially if Werner and Tammy start against at the weekend with Pulisic out.

Rennes Team Preview

Camavinga is a key player for Rennes but he seems out with injury. There threat up front is Guirassy while they have Rugani in their team as a centre back. Rennes have some quality players and like to play football and so they should pose Chelsea threats especially if we make mistakes in posession.
