Chelsea 3 vs. 0 Rennes Champions League Group Stage MD 3

Not the best performance but a positive one!

Chelsea took on Rennes for MD 3 of the Champions League group stage on Wednesday night and came away with 3 points and 3 goals along with another clean sheet. Lampard selected a strong lineup with Mendy in goal, and the defence unchanged with James, Silva, Zouma and Chilwell all starting. Jorginho came in Havertz who sadly will miss out the next few games due to testing positive for Covid. Kante and Mount started ahead of him while Werner, Tammy and Ziyech kept their place up front. A lineup that clearly showed Lampard’s intent on getting 3 points on the board.

Chelsea began the game on the front foot and got the first goal in the 10th minute as Werner was brought down in the box for a penalty. The German stepped up with Jorginho taking a back seat on penalties for now and Timo fired Chelsea into the lead. After the goal Rennes had most of the ball and created the better chances but never really threatened Mendy with any serious attempts. Chelsea found it hard to work out of the press but we stayed solid at the back. The 2nd goal came in the final 5 minutes of the 1st half as a shot hit Dalbert on the thigh and deflected onto his arm. The referee consulted VAR and then went to the monitor to make the decision for himself. A penalty was given and in a shocking decision Dalbert was shown a 2nd yellow and so was sent off. Timo stepped up once again and made it 2-0.

Chelsea began the 2nd half in similar fashion to the first as we dominated with the extra man and Tammy got the 3rd goal in the 50th minute from a very good James cross. Rennes gave Chelsea a run for their money in the 2nd half even with 10 men but Chelsea held on. The referee kept on giving dubious yellow cards to both teams for the smallest of touches but no other player was sent off. The game ended with a Chelsea win and Lampard’s team remaining top of the group along with Sevilla on 7 points.

Chelsea Team Preview

Goalkeeper

Mendy get’s another clean sheet as he continues building his aura in this team and the player’s in front of him continue to benefit from his presence.

Defenders

Another clean sheet for the defence as Chelsea make it 5 consecutive clean sheets in all competitions for the 1st time in 10 years. A good step in the right direction for Lampard and team and the defence just needs to continue to improve. Reece James and Silva stood out while Emerson and Rudiger also came on in the 2nd half as Silva and Chilwell were given a rest.

Midfielders

Jorginho didn’t have the greatest 1st half as he didn’t get to grips with the CDM position. Kante as well playing forward doesn’t have the impact and also seems to stop attacks. Mount had a good game though and Kovacic was also good when he came on for Kante in the 2nd half.

Forwards

Two goals for Werner and a goal for Tammy as our strikers continue to fire. Giroud could have had a goal or two as well when he came on for Tammy but he wasn’t able to finish. Ziyech had an ok game but still showed his class on his occasions while Hudson-Odoi was decent when he came on for the Moroccan.

Lampard

Another clean sheet and 3 more goals saw Lampard once again progress. This game perhaps showed that Chelsea can win ugly even when we don’t have the best games which is also a step in the right direction. Continue to improve and continue to take steps forward.

Next up for Chelsea is a visit from Sheffield United during the weekend before an international break. COME ON CHELSEA!!!
