Big Big Win!
Chelsea took on Sheffield United at home on Saturday night and came out 4-1 winners in emphatic fashion. Lampard selected a strong XI once again as Mendy started in goal with Reece James, Zouma, Silva, and Chilwell in defence. Kante returned as the CDM while Kovacic came in for Havertz while Mount started alongside him. Werner, Abraham, and Ziyech continued up front.
The game started with Chelsea dominant in the 1st 5 minutes, Sheffield United then grew in over the next 5 minutes and McGoldrick gave Sheffield United the lead in the 9th minute with a well worked short corner. Last season this game would have now been a struggle over 80 minutes with Chelsea trying to break the defence and Sheffield United exploiting us on the counter but that was not the case this time. Chelsea shifted gears after the goal and began to put pressure on the away team. Abraham grabbed the equaliser in the 23rd minute as Kovacic cut back a pass for the striker and he finished brilliantly past Ramsdale. From then on it was all Chelsea as Ziyech’s left foot began to run riot. Chilwell got Chelsea the lead in the 34th minute as a Ziyech set piece found him at the back post and the left back knocked it into the net with his thigh. Chelsea could have had a couple more in the 1st half but we headed into half time with a deserved lead.
The 2nd half saw Chelsea continue to dominate the ball and create chances. Sheffield United defended well but the 3rd goal came in the 77th minute as Thiago Silva headed in a Ziyech set piece. First goal for the legendary Brazilian and another assist for the magician. Ziyech was reaching different levels as he sent Werner through on goal but his chipped effort narrowly missed the goal. The 80th minute finally saw Werner get a goal though as a ricochet sent him through on goal and he smashed it past Ramsdale. A resounding victory in the end for Chelsea.
Chelsea Team Review
Mendy didn’t get a clean sheet today but other than the one goal he didn’t really have much to do all game. There was an effort from Lundstram that was dealt with and all crosses and set pieces were handled well by the goalkeeper. Only the 2nd goal conceded, it happens move along.
No clean sheet aside the defence was well drilled again. Zouma and Silva were solid with Silva getting a goal as well while Reece James and Chilwell bossed the flanks. The full backs attacked with intent and Chilwell got a goal but the tracking back was also strong and gave no reason for panic. It is very nice to see two full backs who can attack once again.
The midfield was good today, as we didn’t miss Kai Havertz and Kante slotted back into the CDM position. Kante was solid once again as it seems like the rest in midweek games is doing him some good. Mount was all over once again as him and Kovacic provided runs that attracted players, pressed with intent and played quick passes around the midfield. A top performance all around.
The frontline provided 2 goals and 2 assists as all three were involved in goals. Tammy is improving with his holdup and link up play and is working well with the front line. Werner did well and perhaps was unlucky not to score as he hit the post in the 1st half and missed a chance in the 2nd but he kept going and got a goal. Ziyech was the man of the match though. The Moroccan dictated play throughout the game and his left foot caused havoc. There was a moment in the 2nd half where he dribbled past a Sheffield player and it was mesmerising. This is going to be the first of many brilliant performances for Ziyech and it’s so nice to have such confident players at the club.
Lampard continues to build this team with consistency. The 4-3-3 formation is working as the players finally seem to be getting to know each other. There is much more to come but these are brilliant steps in the right direction and credit goes to Lampard and the coaching staff.
So, Chelsea sit 3rd in the Premier League after Saturday’s game with the most goals and best goal difference in the league and those are small caveats to keep the players going. It’s a bummer that there is now an International break and so most of the players will leave to play 2-3 games with their international teams. Hopefully this gives the likes of Gilmour, Havertz, and Pulisic to recover fully and come back fit for what will be a very hectic and entertaining festive period. Happy Diwali! and COME ON CHELSEA!!!
