The festive period begins!
Chelsea travel to Newcastle on Saturday for what is the beginning of a entertaining but brutal festive period of football. From the weekend until the end of March, Chelsea will play a minimum of 24 games across at least 2 competitions. It is period at the end of which Chelsea fans will know where we are in terms of this teams progression and what are expectations can be come the end of the season. It is a period in which transfers will also take place and so there is much to look forward to in the up coming months.
First up are Newcastle who sit 13th in the Premier League having won 3 drawn 2 and lost 3 of their games this season. Their form in the last 5 games has inconsistent to say the least as they have lost and won 2 games while drawing the other. There is no clear idea of what to expect from Steve Bruce’s side at the moment although regardless of form they have always been a stumbling block for Chelsea over the years. The likes of Wilson, are yet to catch form but as we know these are dangerous players while Maximin is always a tricky customer.
Chelsea go into this game sitting 5th in the table and 3 points behind leaders Leicester. The break has been a good one for Chelsea in that several players were involved in goals and clean sheets but also we had no injury issues. Lampard and co have put in a good run of form and need to continue that in the coming months ahead. The festive period has been a mixed bag for Chelsea over the last few seasons and if we were to put in a consistent run of wins over the next few weeks and months it would really help us consolidate a top 4 place at the very least. The period is gruelling though and injuries will be an issue but we do have a pretty big squad at least until the January transfer window.
Chelsea Team Preview
Lampard said that Chelsea would be without Pulisic who has stepped up training but is not ready yet and possibly Thiago Silva who only just returned to London yesterday. Kai Havertz has tested negative and has been training but it is yet to be seen whether he features. My guess is Kai will be on the bench. There are some players who are awaiting results for tests but hopefully they are all negative. Mendy should start in goal with Reece James at right back and Chilwell at left back. I have a feeling Zouma and Tomori will start as the centre backs. Kante should be in his CDM position with Mount and Kovacic as the 8’s. Werner, Tammy, and Ziyech should start up front. Shouts can be made for Hudson-Odoi but I don’t think he will start.
Newcastle United Team Preview
Newcastle are fairly defensive at the moment but have the likes of Lewis and Murphy who can play as wing backs or full backs. Almiron is always a threat from midfield while the likes of Maximin and Wilson will be a test for Chelsea’s defence. Andy Carroll and Joelinton are a threat from the bench or if they start as well. One can expect Newcastle to defend and counter.
Starting XI Prediction
Newcastle have always been a bogey team for Chelsea and for Lampard and co it is yet another test. With some top teams playing each other this weekend, it’s a good chance for the team to climb up the table. COME ON CHELSEA!!!
