Midweek Football Preview

Pressure starts to build in the Champions League!

Champions League Group Stage MD 4

Group A

Bayern Munich vs. RB Salzburg

Since the reverse fixture which Bayern won 2-6 the Germans have gone on to beat Dortmund and draw with Werder Bremen. RB have drawn and lost one since the same game and so aren’t in great form. If Bayern win this game they seal progression to the Round of 16 while Salzburg are still in the hunt for a place in the next stage but need to win this game.

Atletico Madrid vs. Lokomotiv Moskva

The reverse fixture was a 1-1 draw but Atletico have since won both their games including a win against Barcelona while Lokomotiv have lost one and won one. Atletico have been inconsistent in Europe this season but a win would take them a step closer to the Round of 16. Lokomotiv are still within a chance as well but need to draw or win.

Group B

Inter Milan vs. Real Madrid

The reverse fixture was a close 3-2 win for Real Madrid and since then Inter have drawn one and won one while Real have lost one and won one. Inter and Real need to start winning games if they want to reach the Round of 16. At the moment the group is too close to call but if a team had to win this game it would probably be Inter.

Monchengladbach vs. Shakhtar Donetsk

Monchengladbach thrashed Shakhtar in Ukraine but have since lost one and drawn one while Shakhtar have won one and drawn one. The two teams sit in the top 2 at the moment and a result in either direction or a draw would not be too damaging.

Group C

Olympiacos vs. Man City

Olympiacos lost 0-3 to City in the reverse fixture but have since won both their games while City have drawn one and lost one although those fixtures have come against Liverpool and Tottenham. City are clear in their group and a win against Olympiacos would all but seal a place in the Round of 16 for Pep and co. Olympiacos are still in the hunt as well but their chances would depend on results elsewhere.

Marseille vs. Porto

Porto beat Marseille in the reverse fixture and the french team have since played one game which they won. Porto have since won both their games and are in good form going into the game. A win for Porto could all but seal a place in the Round of 16 but other results would not be too damaging. Marseille need to win to stand a chance of making the Round of 16 otherwise they would be limited to a 3rd place finish at best.

Group D

Ajax vs. Midtjylland

Ajax edged a win against Midtjylland in the reverse fixture and have since won both their games while Midtjylland have won 3 games since the loss. If Ajax win then they seal a Europa League place at the very least. Midtjylland need to win to stand any real chance of making the Round of 16, the Danish team just seem out of their depth.

Liverpool vs. Atalanta

Liverpool thrashed Atalanta in the reverse fixture and have since draw one and won one as their injury crisis seems to not be causing them any massive problems at the moment. Atalanta have since drawn both their games and don’t seem to be in great form at the moment. Liverpool can seal a place in the Round of 16 with a win and Klopp will be hoping that happens with his squad being stretched to the limit. A loss isn’t the worst thing for Atalanta but a win or draw would be better.

Group E

Krasnodar vs. Sevilla

Krasnodar narrowly lost to Sevilla in the reverse fixture and have since lost one and won one while Sevilla have won both their games since then. Sevilla can seal a place in the Round of 16 if they win and Chelsea win while they would seal a Europa League place at the minimum with 3 points. Krasnodar need to win to stand any chance of making the Round of 16.

Group F

Lazio vs. Zenit

Lazio and Zenit drew the reverse fixture and since then Lazio have drawn one and won one while Zenit have won one and drawn one as well. Not much separates the two teams when it comes to form but if Lazio win they can seal a 3rd place finish at the minimum while Zenit need to win to stand any chance of making the Round of 16.

Dortmund vs. Club Brugge

Dortmund beat Brugge in the reverse fixture and have since lost one and won one while Brugge have won both their games since then as well. The top 3 is still to close to call in this group but Dortmund can take another step towards the Round of 16 with a win while if Brugge won it would make the group very interesting.

Group G

Dynamo Kyiv vs. Barcelona

Kyiv narrowly lost to Barcelona in the reverse fixture and have since lost one and won one while Barcelona have won one and lost one since then. Form aside though Barcelona have been dominant in Europe and a win against Kyiv would seal a place in the Round of 16. Kyiv need to win and hope results go in their favour if they want to stand any chance of making the Round of 16.

Juventus vs. Ferencvaros

Juventus comfortably beat Ferencvaros in the reverse fixture and have since drawn one and won one while the Hungarians have won all three of their games. A win for Juventus would seal a place in the Round of 16 for the Italians while Ferencvaros’s best chance would be at Europa League progression. Ferencvaros seem out of their depth but they can still finish 3rd if results go their way in the next few weeks.

Group H

Man United vs. Istanbul Basaksehir

United beat the big teams but fell short against Istanbul as the Turkish side won the reverse fixture. United have since won both their games while Istanbul have won one and lost two since then. The group is too close to call at the moment and results can go either way but a win for United would make matter tough for Istanbul while if Istanbul won they would throw the group wide open.

Paris Saint Germain vs. RB Leipzig

Leipzig beat PSG in the reverse fixture and since then the Germans have won one and drawn one while PSG have won one and lost one. PSG need to win this game to keep matters in their own hands but a win for Leipzig could make qualification to the Round of 16 very tough for the French champions. A high pressure game.

Europa League Group Stage MD 4

Braga vs. Leicester (Group G)

Leicester can seal a place in the Round of 32 and maybe even the top spot if results go their way with a win. Braga have won both their games since losing to Leicester while Leicester have won one and lost one. Braga themselves are in a solid position right now and a loss would not be the end of the world but a win would also bring their progression closer.

Lille vs. AC Milan (Group H)

Lille beat Milan in the reverse fixture and have since lost one and won one while Milan have drawn one and won one. The group is close to call at the moment but a win would either side would put them in the drivers seat going forward.

Molde vs. Arsenal (Group B)

Molde lost to Arsenal in the reverse fixture but have drawn one and won one since while Arsenal have lost one and drawn one since. Regardless of form the Europa League is a step below the Premier League and a win for Arsenal would seal top spot and progression to the knockout stage for Arteta and team. Molde themselves are in a good position though and a win for them would make it race for first with Arsenal.

Tottenham vs. Ludogorets (Group J)

Tottenham won the reverse fixture and have since won both their games while Ludogorets have won their only fixture since then. A win for Tottenham would take them a step closer towards the knockout stage but nothing is certain at the moment. Ludogorets need to win to stand any chance of making the next round.
