Sevilla 0 vs. 4 Chelsea Champions League MD 5 Review

1st place signed and delivered by Giroud!

Chelsea travelled to Seville to play Sevilla on Wednesday night and came away with a massive 0-4 win. Lampard made 9 changes to the side with Mendy remaining in goal, Azpi, Christensen, Rudiger, and Emerson making up a completely different back four while Jorginho, Kovacic, and Havertz made up the midfield. The attack was also changed with Pulisic, Giroud, and Hudson-Odoi. Sevilla also made some changes as they have a game against Real Madrid at the weekend and so it was an even game of sorts.

Chelsea were on the front foot from the beginning and we created some good chances in the opening minutes. The opening goal came in the 8th minute as Havertz glided through the midfield with the ball and laid it off for Giroud who switched the ball to his left foot and finished past the Sevilla goalkeeper. The 1st half then saw some more good moments with Pulisic making some good runs but not finding that final pass or shot. Kovacic was also very positive during the half alongside Havertz. Sevilla then had a patch in the 1st half where they pinned Chelsea back but our new defence stood up well and we were able to keep them out of the goal.

The 2nd half saw only one team dominate and that was Chelsea. The players shifted gears and and in the 54th minute Giroud made it 0-2 with a brilliant chip over the goalkeeper after Kovacic had played a good pass into the Frenchman. Chelsea continued to create chances and probe the Sevilla box and Lampard made 3 subs towards the 65th and 70th minute with Kante, Mount, and Ziyech coming on. We got the 3rd goal in the 74th minute after Ziyech played a wonderful first touch pass into Kante who delivered a perfect cross for Giroud and Oli completed his perfect hattrick. Giroud was then brought down in the box in the 83rd minute and he converted the penalty to make it 4 and seal a brilliant night for him as Werner and Gilmour came on to see out the game.

Chelsea Team Review

Another clean sheet for Mendy as he continues to provide the confidence at the back which allows the players in front of him to play. Did his job when he was called upon and we never looked like we would concede with him in goal. Another great night for him.

Our changed backline did quiet well especially with everyone impressing. Azpilicueta’s quality is known to all and he had a good game along with Emerson who put in a good shift at left back and showed his hunger as he ran the full length of the Sevilla half in the 2nd half to win a corner for Chelsea. Christensen, and Rudiger also put in good performances as a pair and they probably felt secure having Mendy in goal. A good 90 minutes for them.

Jorginho had a quiet game in that he didn’t have much to do but he kept the game ticking and he played good passes to the forward players. Kovacic had a solid game and his marauding runs forward did well to help the team progress up the pitch. Havertz had an effortless game in that he got an assist and glided around the pitch linking up play well and looked good for his 70 odd minutes on the pitch. Mount looked lively when he came on for the final 20 minutes or so while it was good to see Gilmour get on the pitch.

Pulisic and Hudson-Odoi had positive games. Their final product was missing but both of them haven’t played that much and Pulisic for sure hasn’t played many games this season. It was good to see the intention of both the players because their positivity was helping create chance for us. The man of the match was of course Giroud with a perfect hattrick and a penalty and it was great. Giroud has for sure made a case for him to start at the weekend and I personally would start him against Leeds but that’s up to Lampard. Ziyech looked nice when he came on as well while Werner didn’t have much to do.

Made 9 subs and got a 0-4 win at Sevilla, what more can Lampard do. Top of the group and into the Round of 16 and the team is playing well as a squad and not just a couple of players. Progression is clear to see and long may it continue.

Chelsea now play Leeds on Saturday night and the major thing is that fans will be back at Stamford Bridge after 9 months. 2000 for now but it will be good to have us back supporting our team in person. COME ON CHELSEA!!!
