Midweek Football Review

Nothing is final yet!

Champions League Group Stage MD 5

Group A

Atletico Madrid 1 vs. 1 Bayern Munich

Felix scored in the 26th minute to give Atletico the lead and it looked like they would head towards 3 points but Bayern managed to equalise in the 86th minute via Muller and a penalty. Bayern were already through and so neither result would have made a difference while Atletico only manage a point and so their qualification will be decided next week.

Lokomotiv Moskva 1 vs. 3 RB Salzburg

Berisha scored 2 goals in the 1st half for Salzburg in a must win game for the Austrians while Miranchuk got one back for Lokomotiv in the 79th minute. Adeyemi sealed the win for Salzburg in the 81st minute to get the 3 points. The Europa League and final Round of 16 places are up for grab and so any team could go through on the final day.

Group B

Shakhtar Donetsk 2 vs. 0 Real Madrid

Detinho and Solomon scored in the 2nd half to get a massive win for Shakhtar against Real Madrid who are struggling at the moment. Shakhtar go level on points with Real Madrid but move into 2nd while Real Madrid drop into 3rd. All the places are open at the moment for all 4 teams in this group but if Real Madrid drop into the Europa League that would be a massive downer for them more than finishing 4th.

Monchengladbach 2 vs. 3 Inter Milan

Darmian scored in the 17th minute to give Inter the lead but Plea equalised for Monchengladbach right before half time. Lukaku then scored in the 64th and 73rd minute but Plea got one back for Monchengladbach in the 75th minute although they couldn’t get the job done. Inter had to win this game and remain bottom of the table but 3 points away from Monchengladbach and so anything can happen. Monchengladbach themselves can finish anywhere in the table.

Group C

Marseille 2 vs. 1 Olympiacos

Camara gave Olympiacos the lead in the 33rd minute but Payet scored 2 penalties in the 2nd half to take the win for Marseille. This was always a game for the Europa League place and Marseille go level on points with Olympiacos but Olympiacos are ahead on goal difference. The decision will go to the final day.

FC Porto 0 vs. 0 Man City

Neither team was able to break the other down as they shared the point in a game which had little to no consequence. Porto remain 2nd while City remain 1st with a 3 point gap between the two.

Group D

Liverpool 1 vs. 0 Ajax

Curtis Jones scored in the 58th minute and it was enough to seal 3 points for Liverpool. Liverpool seal the top spot and qualification to the Round of 16 while Ajax sit 3rd a point behind Atalanta with 2nd and 3rd to be decided next week.

Atalanta 1 vs. 1 Midtjylland

Scholz gave Midtjylland a surprise lead in the 13th minute and it took a goal from Romero in the 79th minute to equalise for Atalanta and manage a point. Atalanta sit 2nd a point above Ajax with next week now a massive game.

Group E

Krasnodar 1 vs. 0 Rennes

Berg scored in the 71st minute to seal a big win for Krasnodar in a game which would help decide who could finish 3rd. Krasnodar go 3 points clear of Rennes and could have sealed 3rd place but Rennes still have a chance.

Group F

Club Brugge 3 vs. 0 Zenit

Ketelaere scored in the 1st half for Brugge while Vanaken and Lang scored in the 2nd half to seal a big win for Brugge. Brugge seal a minimum finish of 3rd with the win while they sit 2 points behind Lazio who are 2nd. Zenit are knocked out all together and don’t have much to fight for except pride.

Dortmund 1 vs. 1 Lazio

Guerreiro scored for Dortmund in the 44th minute while Immobile equalised for Lazio in the 67th minute via a penalty. Dortmund sit top of the group but nothing is certain yet as they sit a point ahead of Lazio and so the group is still open.

Group G

Juventus 3 vs. 0 Dynamo Kyiv

Chiesa scored in the 1st half while Ronaldo and Morata added 2 more in the 2nd half as Juventus cruised past Kyiv. Juventus were already through and they manage to keep the momentum going but they will remain 2nd. Kyiv are 3rd but level on points with Ferencvaros.

Ferencvaros 0 vs. 3 Barcelona

Griezmann, Braithwaite, and Dembele scored in the 1st half to seal a comfortable win for Barcelona in the 1st half. Barcelona sit 3 points ahead of Juventus but their goal difference seems to good to drop down. Ferencvaros can still make the Europa League.

Group H

Man United 1 vs. 3 Paris Saint Germain

Neymar scored in the 6th minute to give PSG the lead. Rashford equalised for United in the 32nd minute. Marquinhos then restored PSG’s lead in the 69th minute and Fred was sent off for United in the 70th minute. Neymar then made it 3 in extra time to seal a big win for PSG. PSG go top of the group but level on points with United and Leipzig with anything possible. United themselves sit 2nd but anything can happen.

Istanbul Basaksehir 3 vs. 4 RB Leipzig

Poulsen and Mukiele scored in the 1st half to give Leipzig the lead in a must win game but Kahveci got one back for Istanbul before half time. Olmo got a 3rd for Leipzig in the 66th minute but Kahveci got one back for Istanbul in the 72nd minute. Kahveci then equalised for Istanbul in the 85th minute but Sorloth scored the winner for Leipzig in extra time. An intense game which knocks Istanbul out of Europe while Leipzig can now finish anywhere from 1st to 3rd.

Europa League Group Stage MD 5

AC Milan 4 vs. 2 Celtic (Group H)

Rogic and Edouard stormed Celtic to a 0-2 lead within 15 minutes and it served as a wake up call for Milan. Calhanoglu got one back for Milan in the 24th minute while Castillejo equalised for Milan 2 minutes later. Hauge gave Milan the lead in the 50th minute while Diaz made it 4 late in the game. Milan seal progression to the next round with the win but sit a point behind Lille while Celtic are knocked out.

Zorya 1 vs. 0 Leicester (Group G)

Sayyadmanesh scored in the 84th minute for Zorya to seal a big win against Leicester. Although it was to no avail as Leicester remain 4 points clear having already qualified but Leicester’s 1st place is at stake with Braga now level on points with Leicester.

LASK 3 vs. 3 Tottenham (Group J)

Michori gave LASK the lead in the 42nd minute but Bale equalised for Tottenham before half time via a penalty. Son gave Spurs the lead in the 56th minute but Eggestein equalised for LASK in the 84th minute. Alli then scored a penalty in the 86th minute to restore Tottenham’s lead but Karamoko equalised for LASK with a goal in extra time. Tottenham are 3 points clear of LASK as they sit 2nd and the goal difference is too good to drop down.

Arsenal 4 vs. 1 Rapid Wien (Group B)

Lacazette, Mari, and Nketiah scored in the 1st half to give Arsenal a comfortable lead while Wien got one one back through Kitagawa in the 47th minute. Rowe then got a 4th for Arsenal to seal the game. Arsenal make it 5/5 in the Europa League as they sit comfortable and top of the table.
