Massive win for Chelsea!
Chelsea welcomed Leeds to Stamford Bridge on Saturday night with 2000 fans in the stadium for the first time since March. Bielsa had stuck with the team he played against Everton while Lampard rotated most of the team with Mendy staying in goal, Reece James, Zouma, Silva, and Chilwell all returning to the defence. Kante, Mount, and Havertz making up the midfield while Werner, Giroud, and Ziyech started up front. The history was present between teams and managers and it was going to be a firecracker of a game.
Chelsea began the game brilliantly and created a chance in the opening minutes itself. Giroud headed a cross from Mount into the corner but somehow Werner miscued his tap in and cleared the ball. Leeds then got the lead in the 4th minute as Phillips made a brilliant pass into Bamford who skipped past Mendy and scored. Leeds then put some pressure on Chelsea but Lampard and team began to regain momentum and kept creating chances. The equaliser came in the 27th minute as Ziyech played a ball into Reece James who’s cross was headed in by Giroud. Chelsea had several more chances in the 1st half and we could have easily gone in with 3-4 but we ended the half positively.
Chelsea were the only team in the 2nd half as we found another gear and with the fans support dominated Leeds. The 61st minute saw Chelsea take the lead as Mount crossed yet another ball and Zouma rose highest to get his 4th goal of the season. From then on Chelsea kept knocking on Leeds door and even though we didn’t score we still managed to keep the game in control. We sealed out the game in the 93rd minute as Kovacic laid the ball into Werner’s path who’s pace took him away from Leeds defender Dallas and he squared the ball to Pulisic who timed his run perfectly to finish pas Meslier. 3 points signed sealed and delivered as Lampard got another one over Bielsa and Leeds.
Chelsea Team Review
No clean sheet for Mendy today but the goal wasn’t his fault because it was a really good ball by Phillips to catch out the defence. Other than that Mendy made saves when called upon and with Leeds having no real aerial threat he was pretty comfortable in goal.
Standout performance from the defence, Reece James was dominant going forward and defending and his assist was more than he deserved. There was a moment in the game when Bamford tried to tangle with Reece and Reece just used his weight to floor Bamford and the striker looked shook. Reece continues to improve and he’s only 20! Zouma and Silva were solid at the back, Zouma’s aerial ability was massive against Leeds as we won all balls and got the header. Silva was great defensively was crucial to us playing out from the back. The Brazilian had to push through after a tiring game but he did and we are grateful. Chilwell was solid and mirrored Reece in contribution. A defence we can trust.
The midfield had a mixed game as we settled during the 1st half while we dominated in the 2nd. Kante and Mount were standout as they pushed and pressed the Leeds players while carrying the ball forward. They actually got better as the game went on and it was particularly good to see the hunger from Mount in this game. He knows the rivalry with Leeds. Havertz was better in the 2nd half and got into good positions, he’s clearly still gaining form and that’s no issue. Kovacic did well off the bench and added energy to the midfield as brought his brilliant ball carrying to the game.
A good day for forwards after 90 minutes but one with two faces. Ziyech had to go off after the first goal with a suspected hamstring problem and that was shame to see but hopefully its minor and he’s back soon. Giroud scored, Pulisic scored and Werner got an assist. Giroud could have had 3 in the 1st half with numerous chances while Werner just looks off at the moment with his finishing. The German continues to get into good positions and drive and doesn’t seem demotivated it just seems that his finishing is lacking. Timo did get a good assist in the end and credit to him. Pulisic worked hard after coming on and stayed fit while getting a good goal as well. Tammy worked well after coming on and was quite physical which was good to see. Happy days.
Get’s one over a legendary manager in Bielsa and add’s that name to manager’s he has beaten. Just one step at a time for Lampard at the moment as he knows it’s a long haul that matters and we can’t get carried away. Frank is building something and we all love that we are a part of it.
The win takes Chelsea up to 1st and clear by a point as we wait for Spurs and Liverpool to play on Sunday. One step at a time as I previously mentioned as we look to keep the momentum going. Next up is a visit from Krasnodar for a game that can give us a chance to rest several players. COME ON CHELSEA!!!
