Midweek Football Preview

Carabao Cup action!

Carabao Cup Quarter-Finals

Brentford vs. Newcastle

Brentford beat Fulham 3-0 in the Round of 16 and have since won 8 drawn 7 and lost 2 as they sit 4th in the Championship 8 points from the top. Newcastle beat Newport on penalties to reach the Quarters and have since won 4 games drawn 2 and lost 4, inconsistent form at best. Newcastle sit 12th in the Premier League. It should be a close game between the two teams but Brentford are for sure the team in better form at the moment although they do draw a fair few games.

Arsenal vs. Man City

Arsenal beat Liverpool on penalties in the last round but have since endured a tough time domestically. They have won 8 games drawn 2 and lost 7, 6 of those wins have come in the Europa League which really puts into context how poor Arsenal have been in recent weeks, as they sit 15th in the table. City beat Burnley 0-3 in the last round but have also endured a shaky time in relation to their standards. City have won 10 games drawn 6 and lost 1, and while for any other team that would be great the draws are the ones that cause problems. City sit 7th in the table as of now. This should be a fun game but in form City should win but it will be close with City struggling to score goals while Arsenal are struggling all over.

Stoke City vs. Tottenham

Stoke beat Villa 0-1 in the last round and have since won 8 games drawn 5 and lost 4 as they sit 7th in the Championship. Tottenham beat Chelsea on penalties to reach the quarters and have since won 11 games drawn 4 and lost 3 as they have fought in both the Europa League and Premier League but recent losses mean that they sit 5th in the table. Mourinho wants to win Spurs a trophy and that would automatically make him a better Spurs manager than quite a few others. The League Cup is a good starting point and so I expect Spurs to go through.

Everton vs. Man United

Everton beat West Ham 4-1 to reach the quarters and have since dropped off and risen back up in form. They have won 5, drawn 2 and lost 4 in slightly inconsistent form. United beat Brighton 3-0 in the last round and have since themselves gone on a journey. Beating PSG, and Leipzig before then losing a few games to get knocked out in the Champions League while starting poorly in the league to rising up to 3rd in the table. United have won 10, drawn 2, and lost 5 since that game. It’s an all Premier League clash between two teams very close together in the table, Everton and United have already played once this season with United winning 1-3. United are in good form let’s see what happens.

La Liga MW 15

Valencia play Sevilla, Atletico travel to play Real Sociedad, Barcelona travel to Valladolid, and Real Madrid entertain Granada in some interesting games during the week. Ateltico sit top of La Liga level on points with Real Madrid although Ateltico have 2 games in hand over Madrid. Real Sociedad, Villarreal, and Barcelona make up the top five with Sevilla 7th and Valencia 13th. La Liga is looking interesting this season and with some top level fixtures this week could Atletico gain even more distance from the rest.

Serie MW 14

Juventus take on Fiorentina, Inter travel to Verona, Atalanta travel to Bologna, Milan take on Lazio, Napoli entertain Torino, and Roma welcome Cagliari. Milan sit a point clear from Inter in the table while Juventus, Roma and Napoli make up the top 5. Atalanta and Lazio sit 7th and 8th in the table. Serie A like many of the other leagues is turning out to be interesting this season with the resurgent success of Milan while other teams like Juventus have slightly dropped off. Another fun game week.

Ligue MW 17

Rennes take on Metz, Lyon take on Nantes, Monaco welcome St.Etienne, Lille travel to Montpellier, PSG entertain Strasbourg, and Marseille travel to Angers. Some tricky games for Monaco and Lille while the rest have a chance to make up ground in the title race. Lille sit level on points with Lyon at the top of the table while PSG, Marseille and Rennes make up the top 5. Montpellier sit 6th while, Monaco sit 7th. It’s good to see PSG’s dominance being challenged this season to a certain extent and it’s a good chance for the teams around them to continue the momentum this week.
