Chelsea 3 vs. 0 West Ham MW 14 Review

A good London Derby win!

Chelsea took on West Ham on Monday night in for what was a London Derby against the then 8th placed Hammers. Lampard selected a strong XI with Mendy in goal and the backline as per usual with Azpilicueta replacing Reece James at right back. Jorginho returned to the lineup in place of Havertz as Kante was moved further forward alongside Mount. Pulisic and Werner continued on the wings with Tammy replacing Giroud up front. West Ham went slightly defensive in their lineup by dropping Benrahma and opting to play Mark Noble instead.

Chelsea got off to a flying start and dominated the opening minutes of the game as we pressed well and created chances. Chilwell was then caught up in a tackle on Bowen and rolled his ankle. The left back was not able to continue and so Lampard had to bring Emerson on around the 10th minute. Chelsea then got the lead instantly after Mount delivered a good cross into the box which Silva rose to head into the net. The goal though saw West Ham grow into the game and Chelsea had to do quite a bit of defensive work to manage the situation. We did have chances on the counter but players like Tammy and Werner were not able to finish of their final chances.

The 2nd half started with more of the same as West Ham looked the more likely to score and equalise as they loads of possession up until the 65th to 70th minute. Lampard then brought on Kovacic for Jorginho and that allowed more mobility in the midfield for us to press the likes of Rice and Noble. Chelsea then made it 2 in the 78th minute as Werner received the ball on the left and he cut in to take his shot but it lacked poor and turned into a pass that saw Tammy latch on and make it 2-0. Pulisic then did brilliantly to dribble through the midfield and pass into Mount who’s cross knocked off of Pulisic into the path of Abraham who finished once again to make it 3-0 in the 80th minute. Werner then hit the post as well as his luck in front of goal continues to be missing. Chelsea ended the game on a positive as we took the 3 points and kept a clean sheet in a game which we did have to fight quite a lot.

Chelsea Team Review

Goalkeeper

Cleansheet no 10 for Mendy this season in a game where he didn’t have much to do as West Ham failed to register a shot on target even with all the possession they had. Not much else to say.

Defenders

Another clean sheet for the defence which saw both of our full backs missing early on. Reece James wasn’t available and now Chilwell has been added to the fold and one can only hope they are both back soon. Azpilicueta and Emerson did well though and a clean sheet is all you can ask for. Zouma was good once again while Silva added a goal as well which sees our defence’s goal contribution taken to 9 for the season.

Midfielders

Jorginho didn’t have the most effective of games but he did the simple things well. Kante was his vibrant self once again but since he was playing out of position his impact was lacking until Kovacic came on. Mount did well to get the assist but faded after that contribution until the 2nd half where he came out fighting and pressed with intensity once again. Kovacic was good and his ability to avoid the pressure from West Ham allowed us to play further forward. Havertz came on later on for Pulisic and he did well and was more lively than the last few games.

Forwards

An assist for Pulisic, and Werner while Tammy got two on a day where our forward line had to stay patient for the goals. Pulisic was always a threat and looking to run forward with every opportunity as he got into some good spaces and just missed the final pass or shot. Werner himself was getting into good places as he does but his finishing still is off and he seems to overthinking every move shot and pass. The German needs to return the basics and go back on his instinct because he is a lethal striker. Tammy did well and used his body and pace well during the game, he got two strikeresque goals which will do him a world of confidence before the game against Arsenal. A positive outing in general.

Lampard

Couldn’t ask for more from the team as we had to return to winning ways this week. The 3 points and clean sheet will help us bounce back as we go into a hectic schedule next weekend. The sub of Kovacic particularly worked well for the manager.

So chelsea climb up to 5th in the table, 2 points from 2nd as we look to continue the momentum next weekend. It wasn’t the prettiest of games nor our best but we got the jobd done and that’s what’s important for now. Next up is Arsenal on Boxing Day before a day’s rest and Villa on Monday. COME ON CHELSEA!!!
