A fresh start under Tuchel!
It’s been a hectic 3 days if you are a Chelsea fan. Lampard beat Luton and it seemed like things were good heading into this game but Monday morning came around and Lampard was sacked by the evening. The news that Thomas Tuchel would be his replacement was one of the worst kept secrets around and by Tuesday evening in the UK he was Chelsea’s manager. Tuchel held a late training session after having a meeting with the squad that lasted around an hour. There will be a separate post on Tuchel and what I expect from him going forward but for now we focus on the game tonight. Wolves were in dismal form when they met us on the 15th of December and they beat us 2-1 on that day. Since then they have been in dismal form once again not having won a single game in the league. 2 draws and 4 losses later they find themselves 14th in the table and struggling. If Lampard was still around Nuno would probably feel they have a certain idea of how to beat Chelsea but the fact that Tuchel is now the manager and there has been such little time for anyone to adjust no one really knows what’s going to happen.
There has been no press conference prior to the game from a Chelsea perspective so Tuchel has made no comments. Based on previous interviews and past history with Mainz, Dortmund, and PSG we know that Tuchel is quite versatile in the formations he uses. 3-4-3, 4-3-3, 4-2-3-1, 4-2-2-2 we could literally see anything in tonights game. The German has also had only one training session with the team so he won’t want to change to much for this game. I personally don’t know what to expect other than a continuation of a high press and intensity from the players.
Chelsea Team Preview
Mendy should start in goal, with Reece James, Thiago Silva, Zouma, and Chilwell as the backline. I think these guys have been pretty solid throughout the season and there is no need to change the back four and goalie. Going forward with Kante out we might opt for a midfield 2. Mount and Kovacic perhaps. Mount and Gilmour worked well in the last game but I doubt Gilmour will get a start. Hudson-Odoi, and Ziyech to start on the wings with Tammy and Timo up front. I would stick to what had started to work before Lampard got sacked. Of course there is a plethora of things that Tuchel can do he can choose a 3 at the back and use Reece and Chilwell as wingbacks with two up top and a CAM. Or he could play Havertz and rest one of the strikers. There are plenty of options at his disposal and that is why this is confusing at least this first game. There is no context.
Wolverhampton Team Preview
I expect Wolves to stick with a 3-5-2 for this game because it worked well against Chelsea in the reverse fixture. Podence is out though so Vitor Ferreira should probably start in his place. Neto is danger man while Fabio Silva could start but I think Traore will get the nod up top. Marcal is also out so Ait-Nouri should start in his place while Dendoncker, Neves, and Semedo are also threats. It’s a good lineup and one that Chelsea will need to be aware of.
Starting XI Prediction
The fact that this it is purely guess work on how Chelsea will set up has me nervously excited for this game. Lampard would want us fans to back the manager and Tuchel is not at fault when it comes to things that happened over the last few days. We move on as fans and we support the club and Tuchel is our manager. COME ON CHELSEA!!!
