Chelsea 0 vs. 0 Wolverhampton MW 20 Review

A goalless draw in Tuchel’s first game.

On Wednesday night Tuchel entered Stamford Bridge as he began his time as Chelsea manager with a game against Wolverhampton Wanderers. On the pitch Tuchel said that the lineup he selected would be his most unfair because for this game he was purely going on experience. The formation was a 3-4-3 with Mendy starting in goal, and Azpilicueta, Silva, Rudiger starting in front of him. Hudson-Odoi, and Chilwell started as the wingbacks with Havertz and Ziyech playing either side of Giroud. It was an interesting lineup and one which for Tuchel was a free hit after only one hour of training with the squad.

Chelsea started on the front foot and pegged back Wolves whole team in their own half. Hudson-Odoi delivered a brilliant cross into the box which Giroud missed by inches, while we had several more half chances in the 1st half as well. Wolves really had nothing to do, and a complete domination of possession was being implemented. Bar some sporadic counter attacks by Wolves it was all Chelsea and Tuchel managed to break records with the most passes and most possession for a managers first game and the most passes in a game this season. Chilwell had another great chance in the 2nd half while once Mount, and Pulisic had come on we created several more chances. Havertz had the last chance of the game but his header went straight into Patricio’s hands. Some were already saying it was all possession and no result but we did create chances and could have won if we more clinical in the final 3rd.

Chelsea Team Review

Goalkeeper

Another clean sheet for Mendy in a game which he had nothing to do.

Defenders

The 3 at the back was solid and served the purpose as they managed to snuff out any counter attack’s that Wolves attempted. As Tuchel kept repeating we made 16 recoveries in the Wolves half which actually shows how well we pressed. As soon as Wolves got the ball there were around 3 Chelsea players trying to get the ball off the player. Hudson-Odoi did well as a wing back although with so much possession it really was like he was playing right wing. Hudson-Odoi could have gotten a couple of assists while he did manage to get a shot on in the 2nd half. Chilwell did well but he needs to be faster in his touches. Pulisic came on for Chilwell and he caused Wolves problems in the final minutes.

Midfielders

Havertz did well in this game he actually made some good runs and connected play well. The German seemed to be gathering confidence under Lampard and its continuing to gather under Tuchel. Ziyech was influential as well and picked out some really good passes to switch play and find spaces in between the lines. Mount came on for Ziyech late in the 2nd half though and Mount clearly made an impact. The energy and play in between the lines showed why Mount needs to start when not given a rest.

Forwards

Giroud had one really good chance and a couple of half chances in a game where he really should have scored. Tammy came on for Giroud in the 2nd half and he had more energy to get around. There was no clear cut chance on his part though.

A 0-0 draw to start your reign at Chelsea isn’t bad especially when you have had an hour of training with the squad and when the opposition team sits back and defends for 80 minutes. The point means that Chelsea sit 8th in the table 7 points from 4th placed Liverpool. Plenty of work to do for Tuchel and the team but there are reasons to be excited. COME ON CHELSEA!!!
