Weekend Football Review

Not a great weekend for the times.

Premier League MW 21

Everton 0 vs. 2 Newcastle

Newcastle returned to winning ways as Callum Wilson scored a double in the 2nd half to get a massive win for the Magpies. Everton drop down to 8th with the loss with 2 games in hand while Newcastle go up to 15th with the win and bring some respite for Steve Bruce.

Crystal Palace 1 vs. 0 Wolverhampton

Eze scored in the 60th minute as Palace won the duel between two struggling teams. Palace move into 13th with the win while Wolves continue their poor run of form and drop into 14th. Wolves and Nuno need something to go for them in the coming weeks.

Man City 1 vs. 0 Sheffield United

Jesus scored in the 9th minute for City and it looked like there would be plenty more but Sheffield United defended well and limited City to the single goal. The goal was enough for 3 points though as City remain top and 3 points above 2nd now. Sheffield United remain bottom of the table and now 13 points from safety.

West Brom 2 vs. 2 Fulham

Reid scored in the 10th minute to give Fulham the lead but Bartley equalised in the 47th minute to set up an interesting 2nd half. Pereira then got West Brom the lead in the 66th minute but Fulham equalised in the 76th minute via Cavaleiro. The two teams shared the points as the two teams remain 19th and 18th respectively with a 7 point gap between the relegation zone and safety.

Arsenal 0 vs. 0 Man United

A game devoid of any excitement as both teams seemed to decide to settle for a draw. Arsenal actually had a go in the 2nd half but United seemed to be happy to get a point. Arsenal drop into 10th with the point while United remain 2nd 3 points from the top.

Southampton 0 vs. 1 Aston Villa

Southampton were denied a clear penalty by VAR after Cash handled the ball in the box while Barkley scored the only goal of the game in the 41st minute as Villa took 3 points. Southampton remain 11th in the table while Villa move into 9th in the table.

Leicester 1 vs. 3 Leeds

Barnes scored in the 13th minute to give Liecester the lead and it looked like this would be another win for the home side in their march to the top but Leeds had other plans. Dallas equalised 2 minutes later for Leeds while Bamford scored an absolute beauty in the 70th minute to put Leeds ahead. Harrison then sealed the deal in the 84th minute to give Bielsa 3 points. Leicester drop into 4th with the loss while Leeds remain 12th but stay within touching distance of the top 10.

West Ham 1 vs. 3 Liverpool

The first half had West Ham defending with their lives as Liverpool huffed and puffed but the Hammers held on. The 2nd half saw Liverpool bring a bulldozer in Mo Salah though as the Egyptian scored 2 while Wijnaldum scored a 3rd to give Liverpool a comfortable advantage. Dawson scored in the 87th minute but it was a consolation goal. West Ham remain 5th with the loss while Liverpool move into 3rd a point behind United, and end a dismal run of form in the league.

Brighton 1 vs. 0 Tottenham

Trossard scored in the 17th minute and the Seagulls actually dominated the game as Potter and his side got a big win against Mourinho and Spurs. No Kane no party for Spurs as they remain 6th but suffer their 2nd defeat in a row. Brighton remain 17th but now 7 points clear of the relegation zone.

La Liga MW 21

Sevilla beat Eibar 0-2, Real Madrid lost to Levante 1-2, Villarreal drew with Real Sociedad 1-1, Atletico beat Cadiz 2-4, and Messi owned club Barcelona beat Bilbao 2-1. Atletico go 10 points clear at the top of La Liga with a game in hand as Simeone and co just keep steaming ahead. Barcelona move into 2nd on goal difference while Real are 3rd and Sevilla re 4th. Villarreal and Real Sociedad sit 5th and 6th. It’s really a race for top four at the moment with Atletico well and truly clear of the rest.

Serie MW 20

Milan beat Bologna 1-2, Juventus beat Sampdoria 0-2, Inter beat Benevento 4-0, Lazio beat Atalanta 1-3, Napoli beat Parma 2-0, and Roma beat Verona 3-1. Milan remain 2 points clear of Inter at the top of the table with Roma sitting 3rd 4 points behind Inter. Juventus sit 4th while Napoli sit 5th. Lazio sit 6th and Atalanta are 7th in the table. Milan as a city are still leading the table at the moment but the margin isn’t that big and a few results here and there could open the league up.

Bundesliga MW 19

Monchengladbach drew with Union Berlin 1-1, Bayern beat Hoffenheim 4-1, Frankfurt beat Hertha Berlin 3-1, Dortmund beat Augsburg 3-1, and Leipzig beat Leverkusen 1-0. Bayern remain 7 points clear at the top of the table while Leipzig sit 2nd with Wolfsburg and Frankfurt making up the top four. Leverkusen, Dortmund, and Monchengladbach sit 5th, 6th, and 7th respectively. The race for the top four is really interesting in Germany but Bayern are once again heading for the title without any competition.

Ligue MW 22

Lyon beat Bordeaux 2-1, Lorient beat PSG 3-2 in a big win for the title race, Lille beat Dijon 1-0, and Monaco beat Nantes 1-2. Lille go 2 points clear at the top of the table as Lyon move into 2nd. PSG sit 3rd while Monaco sit 4th in the table. The race for the title in France is entertaining after a very long time and 4 teams can fight it out at the moment.
