The final boss in Tuchel’s baptism via Park the bus.
Chelsea travel to the neighbours Tottenham for MW 22 of the Premier League season on Thursday night. Tottenham go into this game having lost the last two in the league and sitting 6th in the table level on points with Chelsea. Mourinho will want a response from his players that were admittedly very poor against Brighton and without Kane looked devoid of any threat up front. Just a month or so ago Mourinho and Spurs similar to Chelsea were being talked about as title challengers but now it is very much a fight to get into the top four. Add to that the fact that Jose is playing Chelsea and it just increases the intensity of the game given the history of this fixture. It might just be halfway but it is a big game for both teams.
Chelsea go into this game having drawn against Wolves and beaten Burnley 2-0 during the weekend. So far its been a positive start to life under Tuchel with Mendy having had only a shot to save over two games while the 2nd half against Burnley was one of the best half’s that Chelsea have played this season. The free flowing football was on display for everyone to see and the only thing missing was the lack of finishing that would have seen us win by a bigger margin. We now face off against Spurs who under Mourinho are probably the biggest team to park the bus. One can throw form out of the window in these games because for some reason every team treats a game against Chelsea as a cup final. We can sit here and say that Spurs defence is poor and they can’t seem to score but one can be assured that if we are not up to the levels we have been in the last two games there will be problems to face. Chelsea’s pressing game has vastly improved over the last week as we are snuffing out any danger at the half way line. Tuchel has very much used the first two games to assess what he has at his disposal and while 3 at the back has stuck around the formation has switched in game when it comes to attack. Sometimes it’s a 1-2, other times its a front 3 although the 1-2 really helped us in the 2nd half against Burnley. With Tuchel it’s really anyone’s guess as to what team we field.
Chelsea Team Preview
Chelsea have a full strength squad to select from but it is interesting to see whether Tuchel will stick with the 3-4-1-2 or switch it up to a back four. I personally think we could see a back four in this game. Mendy in goal with Reece James, Silva, Rudiger, and Chilwell making up the defence. Kante, and Jorginho could start in the pivot with Hudson-Odoi, Mount, and Ziyech playing behind Werner. We could of course see a 3 at the back as well but I just don’t think we would be able to fit Kante into the team unless we dropped one of Jorginho and Kovacic and I don’t think Tuchel will do that. The attack is anyone’s guess with the sheer amount of quality available to Tuchel but I think Hudson-Odoi, and Mount will be in there regardless. It’s a solid team and a 3 at the back would probably be the option that Tuchel takes I personally would go with a 4 though and add an extra man in midfield.
Tottenham Team Preview
Tottenham will most likely be without Kane for this game and that is a massive blow for them because without him the goals dry up. Son is the danger man in the team but alone he really can’t do much. I expect Spurs to set up with a back 3 to sit back and counter Chelsea with the pace they have in Son, Bergwijn, and Bale. Bale has been quiet and Chelsea need to keep it that way because the quality is still there regardless of the form. Hojbjerg and Ndombele have added a solidity in the midfield along with the creativity of the Frenchman who has really turned up this season. It’s in defence that Spurs have issues with Reguilon out and Sissoko having to play right wing back. Doherty might come in for this game with Sissoko dropping into defence because Sanchez was poor in the last game. Mourinho does have Vinicius and Moura on the bench and they could start but I think Mourinho will stick with what he’s got and use them as bench options.
Starting XI Prediction
Chelsea haven’t beaten a traditional top 6 team this season and that needs to change if we want to move up the table. Under Lampard we always seemed to help out the struggling teams but at the moment we are struggling as well and putting that aside Tuchel and the players need to change that. We need to be ruthless and impose our authority and win this game. It will be tough, any game against Mourinho’s team is but we won last season and we can for sure win this season. COME ON CHELSEA!!!
