Not the result we wanted.
Chelsea travelled to Elland Road to play Leeds on Saturday for MW 28 of the Premier League season. Tuchel made a string of changes for the game with Mendy in goal, and Azpilicueta, Christensen, and Rudiger being the only regulars in the team. Pulisic, and Chilwell started as the wing backs with Jorginho, and Kante in the midfield. Mount, Ziyech and Havertz started up front. On the face of it, I liked the attacking lineup and felt that it was more of a 4-2-3-1 but once on the pitch it was a 3-4-3. Leeds lined up as expected in their 4-1-4-1 while the pitch at Elland Road was not great at all.
The game wasn’t great and while Chelsea dominated the ball for most of the game there were chances on both sides. I think for this game in particular it’s better to jump to the player reviews to give a better idea of how the game went.
Chelsea Team Preview
Mendy kept yet another clean sheet for Chelsea and perhaps this one is the one he had to work hardest for. Several key and brilliant saves by Mendy to keep Chelsea in the game and he was great. At the moment Mendy has been our best signings this season. Top class.
The defending was solid although the passing wasn’t up to standard yesterday. The 3 centre backs did well as usual and kept the clean sheet. Chilwell was good defensively and got forward on occasion but he missed 1-2 good chances. Chilwell also received a lot of flack form the fanbase after the game. Was Chilwell great? No, but he is in the team to defend first and he did that. If Chilwell scores a goal it’s a bonus on top of the performance. Reece James was good when he came on. Good outing and another clean sheet.
Jorginho and Kante were good. Leeds knew that Jorginho get’s a lot of the ball and he was quickly pressed by the nearest Leeds player at any time. Maybe someone like Kovacic who can dribble out would have done well in this game but with both Jorginho and Mount out of the Atletico game they were always going to play yesterday. Kante was great defensively and also got forward on countless occasions but finishing will never be the Frenchman’s strongsuit. Mount did well during the game but lost intensity in the 2nd half.
Pulisic started his first game under Tuchel and he was ok. The American got forward and delivered some good crosses but was limited on the right. Add to that the facts that he was playing as a right wing back, against a high pressing Leeds, on a poor pitch and his performance actually looks better. Ziyech was decent but also I think he is limited when playing more centrally. On the occasions when Ziyech did get wider on the right he delivered 2-3 good crosses with his left foot and Chelsea nearly got goals. Havertz did well as the striker once again and should have scored 1-2 times. It’s good for the German though and that’s two successive starts which should hopefully continue the positive momentum. Hudson-Odoi was lively when he came on but no real impact. Werner didn’t have an impact on the game and was limited.
Tuchel maybe made too many changes for this game. The fluidity in attack was missing with so many players having not played together this season. Other than though we still managed to create chances and it was only poor finishing that let us down again. A clean sheet and a point on the board. The run continues for the German.
So Chelsea remain 4th with the point and at the time of writing this 3 ahead of West Ham who sit 5th and 3 behind United who sit 3rd after Leicester won on Sunday. It’s a tight race but Chelsea are still well placed. The next games are key. Next up a visit by Atletico in the Champions League! COME ON CHELSEA!!!
