Weekend Football Preview

Club football is back for the final stretch!!!

Premier League MW 30

Leeds vs. Sheffield United

Leeds sit 11th in the table as they take on bottom of the table Sheffield United. With 9 games to go Sheffield United are all but relegated as they sit 14 points from safety. Leeds are looking to get a top 10 finish and maybe they could make one of the European spots. Leeds have won 2 of their last 5 games while Sheffield have won 1 and lost 4. Leeds should be all over Sheffield United but the Blades are decent defensively, let’s see whether they can go down with a fight. Leeds won the reverse fixture 0-1.

Leicester vs. Man City

3rd placed Leicester take on table toppers Man City on Saturday night. City have won 4 of 5 while Leicester have won 3 of their last 5. Two teams in similar form and doing well in their respective competitions. As Leicester enter this final phase their goal will be to stay in the top four as opposed to last season when they dismally dropped out. City will want to seal the league as soon as possible and focus on the Champions League. Leicester need to start beating teams at the top to stand a chance. Leicester thrashed City 2-5 in the reverse fixture but its highly unlikely that score line will be the same this time out.

Arsenal vs. Liverpool

Super Saturday ends with a big just in terms of the teams involved as 9th placed Arsenal take on 7th placed Liverpool. A win for Arsenal would take them within a point of Liverpool while Liverpool could go 5th if they win. Arsenal have only lost 1 of their last 5 games although only won 2 while Liverpool have lost 3 of their last 5. It should be a close game with neither team in blistering form but both are trying to reach Europe in some capacity. Liverpool won the reverse fixture 3-1.

Southampton vs. Burnley

14th placed Southampton have 1 win in 5 while Burnley sit 15th level on points behind them. Burnley have only lost 1 of their last 5 games. A team in poor form vs. a team with solid defence. Burnley should win this game based on current form as both look to keep distancing themselves from relegation. Southampton won the reverse fixture 0-1.

Newcastle vs. Tottenham

17th placed Newcastle sit 2 points above the relegation zone as they take on 6th placed Spurs who can remain within 3 of the top four if they win this game. Spurs are well positioned to take advantage of a teams drop in form but Tottenham themselves have been shaky in recent games. Newcastle should be easy for Spurs for though and I can’t see the Magpies winning. The reverse fixture was a 1-1 draw.

Aston Villa vs. Fulham

10th placed Villa have lost pace as they head into the final stretch of the season as they take on 18th placed Fulham who sit 2 points from safety. Two teams that only have 1 win each in their last 5 games so both are looking to get a bounce back in form. Two teams that like to attack as well I think this should be an entertaining game to watch. Villa won the reverse fixture 0-3.

Man United vs. Brighton

2nd placed United are unbeaten in their last 5 games and as the take on Brighton who sit 16th and have won their last two in the league. Brighton are in a relegation fight and two wins have created a 6 point gap from the bottom. The reverse fixture was very unlucky for the Seagulls as they lost unfairly in a game they dominated. United are in decent form and probably won’t lose this game but it would be great to see Brighton get one back on Ole and co. United won the reverse fixture 2-3.

Everton vs. Crystal Palace

8th placed Everton have lost their last 2 as they take on 12th placed Palace who have 1 win in their last 4. Everton need to bounce back as they lose ground in the the race for Europe while Palace are looking stay in this mid table pack. Everton won the reverse fixture 1-2.

Wolverhampton vs. West Ham

13th placed Wolves have not won in 4 as they take on 5th placed West Ham who have not won in their last 2. Wolves don’t have much going for them at the moment while West Ham are looking to finish in the top 6. It’s a tricky game for the Hammers and this could be a massive game in the larger context for them. West Ham won the reverse fixture 4-0.

La Liga MW 29

Villarreal travel to Granada, Real Madrid take on Eibar, Atletico travel to Sevilla, Barcelona take on Valladolid, and Real Sociedad take on Bilbao. As La Liga enters it’s final 10 games Atletico sit 4 points clear at the top fo the table with Barcelona sitting 2nd and Real Madrid two points behind them in 3rd. Sevilla are 4th 5 points behind Real Madrid. The top four seems set in Spain but the race for the title is far from over. Atletico were suffering before the break and saw a massive lead cut down to 4. Barcelona look the team in form while Real Madrid have to do some work. Atletico have no Champions League duties though same as Barcelona while Real Madrid are still involved in the competition. An interesting few months ahead.

Serie MW 29

Milan take on Sampdoria, Atalanta welcome Udinese, Napoli entertain Crotone, Roma travel to Sassuolo, Lazio take on Spezia, Juventus play a derby against Torino, and Inter travel to Bologna. Inter have a game in hand as they sit 6 points clear at the top of Serie A. Milan sit 2nd 4 points clear of Juventus but Juventus have a game in hand. Atalanta sit level on points with Juventus but have no game in hand. Napoli sit 5th in the table 2 points behind Atalanta with a game in hand while Roma sit 3 points behind Napoli. Lazio are a point behind Roma. The race for the top four is still very open in Italy with 10-11 games to go. Inter in the driving seat for now with the rest playing catchup.

Bundesliga MW 27

7 games to go in the Bundesliga as Leverkusen take on Schalke, Dortmund take on Frankfurt, Bayern travel to Leipzig for the biggest game and Monchengladbach take on Freiburg. Bayern sit 4 points clear at the top of the table with Leipzig behind them. A win for Leipzig would take them to within a point of Bayern while Bayern can go 7 points clear with a win. Wolfsburg sit 3rd 6 points behind Leipzig while Frankfurt sit 4th 4 points behind Wolfsburg. Dortmund are 5th and 4 points behind Frankfurt, while Leverkusen are 3 points behind Dortmund. Monchengladbach are 10th 4 points behind Leverkusen. It’s a big weekend for the title race in the Bundesliga while Dortmund are fighting to finish in the top four.

Ligue MW 31

Monaco take on Metz, PSG play Lille, and Lyon travel to Lens. A big game in Ligue 1 with the table toppers playing each other. PSG and Lille are level on points at the top and win for either would take them 3 clear of the other. Lyon sit 3 points behind the two in 3rd and will be hoping for a draw so they can go within a point from the top. Monaco will be hoping for a draw as well as they sit a point behind Lyon in 4th. It’s very much a 4 horse race at the moment in France with 8 games to go.
