Weekend Football Review

Nothing decided yet!

Premier League MW 36

Newcastle 3 vs. 4 Man City

The week started with a blitz of goals on Friday night. Krafth gave Newcastle the lead in the 25th minute only for Cancelo and Torres to score to make it 1-2 for City. Newcastle then converted a penalty via Joelinton right before half time to make it 2-2. Willock then gave Newcastle the lead in the 62nd minute but Torres scored in the 64th and 66th minute to complete a hattrick and comeback for City. Newcastle remain 16th with the loss while City increase their winning gap to 13.

Burnley 0 vs. 4 Leeds

Klich scored right before half time while Harrison scored another and Rodrigo added two more to make it a comfortable win for Leeds in this game. Burnley remain 15th with the loss while Leeds remain 10th. Leeds won’t be able to finish in Europe though as the top 7 places are out of their reach. A top 10 finish is a very good target for them going into the final two games.

Southampton 3 vs. 1 Fulham

Adams scored in the 1st half while Tella scored in the 2nd to make it 2-0 for Southampton. Carvalho got one back for Fulham in the 75th minute but Walcott sealed the win late in the game. Southampton remain 14th with the win but win two games in a row after a long time. Fulham suffer yet another loss as they look to be ending the season with a whimper.

Brighton 1 vs. 1 West Ham

This game was neck and neck until the final 10 minutes. Welbeck gave Brighton the lead in the 84th minute but Benrahma decided to score his first goal for West Ham in the 87th minute to get a point for the Hammers. Brighton remain 17th while West Ham drop into 7th. West Ham are still in danger of dropping out of Europe entirely but currently sit in a Conference league place.

Crystal Palace 3 vs. 2 Aston Villa

McGinn gave Villa the lead in the 17th minute but Benteke equalised in the 32nd minute for Palace. The parity was short lived as El Ghazi made it 2 for Villa in the 34th minute. Zaha and Mitchell scored in the final 15 minutes of the 2nd half to give Palace the win though. Palace remain 13th with the 3 points while Villa remain 11th and can now only finish as high as 9th ending any hopes of European football this season.

Tottenham 2 vs. 0 Wolverhampton

Kane scored right before half time while Hojbjerg scored in the 2nd half to make it a comfortable win for Spurs against Wolves. Spurs move into 6th on goal difference and 5 points from 4th with 2 games to go. European football is not certain for them yet though. Wolves remain 12th in the table with the loss.

West Brom 1 vs. 2 Liverpool

The referees and authorities seem to be trying their best to get Liverpool top four as West Brom were robbed of a point or more. Kanu gave West Brom the lead in the 15th minute but Salah scored a great goal to level matters in the 33rd minute. West Brom then had the ball in the net in the 2nd half but it was unfairly judged off side by VAR. It seemed a West Brom player far away from Alisson was blocking his view. Liverpool then scored the winner in the 95th minute as Alisson came out for a corner and scored. West Brom remain 19th with the loss, while Liverpool remain 5th and go within a point of 4th placed Chelsea. Liverpool can’t finish below 7th though which means they will get some form of European football.

Everton 0 vs. 1 Sheffield United

Jebbison scored in the 7th minute to give Sheffield United the lead and the Blades held on for an unlikely win. Everton now sit 8th still capable of finishing up to 6th with 2 games to go. Sheffield United get a win which will give them some sort of mental boost.

La Liga MW 37

Real Madrid beat Athletic Bilbao 0-1, Villarreal thrashed Sevilla 4-0, Atletico came from behind to win in the final seconds against Osasuna 2-1, and Barcelona lost to Celta Vigo 1-2. Atletico remain 2 points clear at the top of the table thanks to Luis Suarez and a win or draw could be enough on the final day to get them the title depending on what Real do. Real sit 2nd 2 points behind Atletico and would need to win their game by a big margin for an Atletico draw to be enough otherwise Atletico have to lose. Barcelona sit 3rd and can’t finish higher than that as their title race is over. Sevilla remain 4th but only 2 points behind Barcelona. So La Liga becomes a two horse race heading into the final games of the season.

Serie MW 37

Atalanta beat Genoa 3-4, Juventus beat Inter 3-2, Roma beat Lazio 2-0, Napoli beat Fiorentina 0-2, and Milan drew with Cagliari 0-0. Inter’s gap at the top is cut down to 10 points not that it matters. Atalanta sit 2nd 3 points clear of 5th placed Juventus and while Juventus can still match Atalanta the goal difference is to vast and so Atalanta should have secured Champions League football. Napoli, Milan, and Juventus are separated by a point as that is the race to keep an eye on going into the final weekend.

Bundesliga MW 33

Schalke beat Frankfurt 4-3, Leverkusen drew with Union Berlin 1-1, Bayern drew with Freiburg 2-2, Dortmund beat Mainz 1-3, and Leipzig drew with Wolfsburg 2-2. Bayern see their lead at the top remain 10 points not that it matters. Leipzig secure 2nd place for the season. Dortmund and Wolfsburg also secure Champions League football for next season although who finishes higher is yet to be seen. Frankfurt secure Europa League football with 5th place finish. Leverkusen and Monchengladbach will not be playing European football next season. Dortmund achieve their target with a game to go as the races are run in the Bundesliga for this season.

Ligue MW 37

Lyon beat Nimes 2-5, PSG beat Reims 4-0, Lille drew with St.Etienne 0-0, and Monaco beat Rennes 2-1. Lille’s draw means that they now only remain a point clear at the top of the table. It doesn’t really change much as Lille still need to win their final game. The win for PSG means that the lowest they can finish is 3rd although if Lille drop points they can win the league if they win. Monaco can finish 2nd and can even be champions but for that they would need a massive swing in goal difference. Lyon can finish 3rd if Monaco drop points on the final day. Everything to play for in France going into the final games.
