Last but not least! It’s the final weekend for domestic football in Europe’s top 5 leagues! Titles, and Europe at stake!
Premier League MW 38
Leicester vs. Tottenham
5th placed Leicester dropped out of the top four on goal difference during the week and now play a must win game against 7th placed Tottenham if they want any chance of making Champions League football. Leicester are guaranteed Europa League football for next season but regardless of a win they would need Liverpool or Chelsea to drop points to stand a chance. A draw would be enough if Liverpool lose. Spurs have a chance of finishing 6th on goal difference but they would need West Ham to lose. Spurs can also drop down to 9th if they drop points and I think teams would prefer that than playing in the Conference League. A must win game for both teams in terms of Europe but Leicester will that home advantage with fans.
Wolverhampton vs. Man United
12th placed Wolves take on 2nd placed United in a game of no real stake on the final day. Wolves can’t finish higher than 12th, but they could drop down to 15th if results elsewhere don’t go their way. United sit 2nd and have 1 win in their last 5 games, none in their last 3. United have not looked great in over the last week or two and there is every possibility that Wolves can finally win a game. Wolves will be playing in front of their fans and the fans will want the team to end on a high for the season.
West Ham vs. Southampton
6th placed West Ham are looking to secure Europa League football with a draw or win against Southampton. Southampton sit 14th and can finish as high as 12th if they win their game and results elsewhere are favourable. West Ham are the ones who will want to win and secure 6th in front of their fans to cap of a very good season for the Hammers. Big game for them.
Sheffield United vs. Burnley
Bottom of the table Sheffield United will be looking to head into the Championship with a win in their final Premier League game. Fans will be in the stadium as well for the Blades. Burnley sit 17th and can finish as high as 15th if they win and goal difference goes their way. A bit of a nothing game but Sheffield United will want to win.
Fulham vs. Newcastle
18th placed Fulham are heading back to the Championship and they will be thinking what if they had finished all the chances they created in games. Fulham will want to go back down with a win in front of their fans. Newcastle sit 15th and can go as high as 12th if the results go their way. Newcastle have been in better form recently but Fulham are a tricky team and they will be more than up for it.
Leeds vs. West Brom
10th placed Leeds have secured a top 10 finish which is great for them in their first season back in the Premier League. Leeds can finish as high as 8th if they win and results go their way but Europe doesn’t seem a possibility. West Brom are relegated and with Allardyce leaving there are question marks about what’s next. Leeds should win in their final game in front of their fans this season. They have a lot to celebrate.
Arsenal vs. Brighton
Arsenal sit 9th in the table and can finish as high as 7th with a win if results go their way. 7th would get them a position in the Conference League which is laughable for a club of Arsenal’s history. I think Arsenal would like to avoid the Conference League but you never know. Brighton sit 16th and beat Man City during the week and they can finish as high as 13th with a win if results go their way. Arsenal have something to achieve with a win but do they really want to play in the 3rd tier of European football?
Man City vs. Everton
Champions Man City play their final game in front of the fans and it will see them lift the Premier League trophy in front of their fans as well. City lost during the week so they will want to end the league on a win. Everton sit 8th and can finish in 7th if Spurs drop points. 7th would get them into the European Conference League which would be decent finish for Ancelotti and the Toffees. Baby steps. An interesting game for sure.
Liverpool vs. Crystal Palace
Liverpool sit 4th in the table on goal difference a point behind Chelsea who are 3rd. A win for Liverpool would secure a top four finish while a draw would be enough if Leicester or Chelsea dropped points. The Kop will be back as well and while the fans couldn’t see their team lift the trophy as Champions they could back them to a top four finish. Palace sit 13th in the table and trend wise they should win this game. A win could take the Eagles to 12th in Roy Hodgson’s last game as a manager. Liverpool should win this but Palace have been a problem for Liverpool when it counts.
La Liga MW 38
Atletico travel to Valladolid, Real Madrid take on Villarreal, Barcelona travel to Eibar, and Sevilla take on Alaves. Atletico sit 2 points clear of Real Madrid going into the final day. A win would guarantee Atletico the title while a draw would be enough if Real Madrid dropped points. A draw would be enough if Real Madrid won as well but it would go to goal difference and Real Madrid would have to score 3 or more to beat Atletico on goal difference. For Real they need to beat Villarreal and hope Atletico drop points to win La Liga. Barcelona will be looking to secure 3rd with a win while Sevilla will be looking to finish 3rd hoping Barcelona drop points. All four teams will be playing Champions League football regardless. Real Sociedad, and Real Betis sit in the Europa League places but Villarreal sit a point behind them in 7th. A win for Villarreal along with dropped points by one of the above teams would get Emery and co back into the Europa League. Although Emery also has the Europa League final which if they win can take them into the Champions League. All to play for in Spain but the title is the most interesting race.
Serie A MW 38
Inter take on Udinese, Atalanta take on Milan, Juventus travel to Bologna, Lazio travel to Sassuolo, Napoli take on Verona, and Roma travel to Spezia. Inter have already been Champions for a few weeks now so they have nothing to play for apart from celebrate. Atalanta sit 2 points ahead of Milan in 2nd with Milan in 3rd. Atalanta have all but secure Champions League football as they can finish 5th if they lose and Juventus win but there would have to be a swing of 9 goals in terms of goal difference. Milan can secure top four with a win, a draw would be enough if Napoli or Juventus drop points. A loss for Milan would take everything out of their hands. Napoli are in the same position as Milan as they sit 4th and the same parameters would apply. Juventus sit 5th and can get into the top four with a point if Milan lose. A win would take them into the top four if Milan or Napoli fail to win. Lazio have secure 6th while Roma should finish 7th. It’s all a bit mathematical in terms of the top four race in Italy but the key game is Atalanta vs Milan.
Bundesliga MW 34
Monchengladbach travel to Werder Bremen, Frankfurt take on Freiburg, Leizpig travel to Union Berlin, Wolfsburg play Mainz, Bayern take on Augsburg, and Dortmund play Leverkusen. Bayern won the title last week while Leipzig have secure 2nd. Dortmund and Wolfsburg have secured a top four finish and Champions League football although the order in which they finish depends on these results. Frankfurt, and Leverkusen have sealed 5th and 6th which get’s them Europa League football. Nothing to play for in Bundesliga on the final day which is probably the only league which we can say that for.
Ligue 1 MW 38
Lyon play Nice, Lille travel to Angers, Monaco travel to Lens, PSG travel to Brest. Lille sit a point clear of PSG at the top of the table and 3 points clear of Monaco who are 3rd. A win for Lille would win them Ligue 1 regardless of results elsewhere. A draw would be enough if PSG dropped points as well. A loss would be enough if PSG lost their game and Monaco dropped points. PSG can win Ligue 1 if they win and Lille drop points. A draw would be enough if Lille lose. A loss would not do them any good. So basically a must win game for the holders. Monaco can win Ligue 1 if they win and both Lille and PSG lose their games. Lille have a +6 goal difference over Monaco and there would have to be a swing in that as well. Lyon sit a point behind Monaco and are currently 4th which would get them Europa League football. Lyon can get CL football if they win and Monaco drop points. A draw would be enough if Monaco lose as well. Lille, and PSG are realistically chasing the title while Monaco and Lyon are fighting it out for top four. All to play for.
