Weekend Football Review

What a final day!

Premier League MW 38

Leicester 2 vs. 4 Tottenham

This was a big game in terms of the top four and Conference league race. Vardy scored a penalty in the 18th minute to give Leicester the lead which put them into the top four. Kane equalised for Spurs right before half time. Vardy restored Leicester’s lead in the 52nd minute via another penalty. Schmiechel scored an own goal in the 76th minute to bring Spurs back into the game. Bale then scored two goals in the 87th and 96th minute to give Spurs a massive win. The loss for Leicester means that they finish 5th after a dramatic game, which gets them Europa League football for a 2nd year running. Tottenham finish 7th in the table which seals them a place in the Conference League.

Wolverhampton 1 vs. 2 Man United

United fielded their 2nd string side against Wolves who were at home and it was Nuno’s last game as manager. Elanga gave United the lead in the 13th minute but Semedo equalised for Wolves in the 39th minute. Mata scored a penalty right before half time to give United the lead. That goal was enough for United. Wolves finish 13th in the table while United finish 2nd in the league.

West Ham 3 vs. 0 Southampton

Fornals scored two goals in the 1st half while Rice added a goal in the 2nd as West Ham ran riot at home on the final day in front of the fans. West Ham seal 6th with the win and that is a massive accomplishment by David Moyes. The Hammers will be playing Europa League football next season. Southampton finish 15th in a disappointing season for them.

Sheffield United 1 vs. 0 Burnley

McGoldrick scored in the 24th minute to give Sheffield United the lead and they won on the final day in front of their fans to go back to the Championship with some momentum. If only fans had been there for them during the season. Burnley finish 17th and continue their journey in the Premier League.

Fulham 0 vs. 2 Newcastle

Willock scored in the 23rd minute to continue his amazing run and give Newcastle the lead. Schar then scored a penalty in the 88th minute to complete the win for Newcastle. Fulham were relegated a while back and now go back into the Championship needing to fight once again. Newcastle end the season with a good run of form and finish 12th in what is a good season for Steve Bruce.

Leeds 3 vs. 1 West Brom

Rodrigo and Phillips scored in the 1st half while Bamford scored in the 79th minute via the spot to give Leeds a big lead in front of their fans. Robson-Kanu got a consolation goal in the 90th minute. Leeds finish 9th in the table in a brilliant first season back in the Premier League. West Brom were already relegated and go back down to the Championship with uncertainty.

Arsenal 2 vs. 0 Brighton

Pepe scored in the 49th minute and 60th minute to give Arsenal the lead and the Gunners kept the lead in front of their fans. Arsenal finish 8th in the table and without European football for the first time in 25 years. Brighton remain 16th in the table and go again next season.

Man City 5 vs. 0 Everton

De Bruyen, Jesus, Foden, and 2 goals from Aguero capped off a big win for City on the final day in front of their fans. They ended the day by lifting the trophy in front of those fans. City are Premier League champions for the 5th time while Everton finish 10th in the table as they end the season with a slump.

Liverpool 2 vs. 0 Crystal Palace

Mane scored in either half in front of their fans to seal a win for Liverpool on the final day which got them 3rd and top four. It’s been a rough season for Klopp and the team but they got what they could achieve in the end. Palace finish the season in 14th, a decent position but with the Eagles at a crossroads.

La Liga MW 38

Atletico came from behind to beat Valladolid 1-2, Real Madrid came from behind to beat Villarreal 2-1, Barcelona beat Eibar 0-1, and Sevilla beat Alaves 1-0. Everyone won their games which meant that the positions stayed the same as Atletico were crowned Champions of Spain on the final day. Atletico made it tough for themselves in the end but they got the job done. Real Madrid come close but they get a 2nd placed finish which they probably deserve while Barcelona finish 3rd. Sevilla finish 4th in the table and get the final Champions League place. Sociedad, and Betis seal the Europa League places while Villarreal will be playing Conference League football if they can’t beat United in the Europa League final. An entertaining La Liga season for sure with the title race going to the final day.

Serie MW 38

Inter thrashed Udinese 5-1, Milan beat Atalanta 0-2, Juventus beat Bologna 1-4, Sassuolo beat Lazio 2-0, Napoli drew with Verona 1-1, and Roma drew with Spezia 2-2. Inter finish the season with 91 points as they are crowned Serie A Champions at home on the final day. Milan finish 2nd in a good season as they achieve Champions League football for the first time in 7 seasons. Atalanta get 3rd while Juventus manage to creep into 4th to get the final Champions League place. Napoli and Lazio finish 5th and 6th to get the Europa League places. Roma manage to get a point and finish 7th as they will be playing Conference League football with Mourinho in charge next season. A solid Serie A season and again it’s good to see the dominance of Juventus ended by the man who started it all those years ago, Antonio Conte.

Bundesliga MW 34

Monchengladbach beat Werder Bremen 2-4, Frankfurt beat Freiburg 3-1, Union Berlin beat Leipzig 2-1, Mainz beat Wolfsburg 2-3, Bayern thrashed Augsburg 5-2, and Dortmund beat Leverkusen 3-1. Everything was sorted going into the final day in Germany but just to confirm it Bayern were crowned champions for yet another season but Lewandowski broke Gerd Muller’s record to scored 41 Bundesliga goals in a season. Leipzig slump to 2nd while Dortmund finish 3rd and Wolfsburg finish 4th. Frankfurt and Leverkusen will be playing Europa League football. Union Berlin finish 7th and secure Conference League football in a brilliant season for them. The Bundesliga panned out as predicted and there was no upset this year.

Ligue MW 38

Nice beat Lyon 2-3 in a tense game, Lille beat Angers 1-2, Monaco drew 0-0 with Lens, and PSG beat Brest 0-2. Lille are Champions of France by a point as they end PSG’s run. Lille were brilliant and consistent throughout the season. PSG finish 2nd and Pochettino once again bottles a title race. Monaco finish 3rd and return to Champions League football. Lyon finish 4th and will be playing Europa League football while Marseille will join them there. Rennes finish 6th and will be playing in the Conference League. Ligue 1 was great this season and it went down to the wire. It was a brilliant campaign by Lille and they have a strong team to build on.
