Weekend Football Review

Football with fans is back with a bang!

Premier League MW 1

Brentford 2 vs. 0 Arsenal

Brentford kicked the league off on Friday night as they entertained Arsenal at the Brentford Community Stadium. It was the first time fans were allowed into the newly built stadium and the first time since 2020 when the stadium was at capacity. It was a great game with the Brentford fans relentlessly chanting about their players and clubs. The atmosphere was electric and thanks to that Brentford got a big 2-0 over Arsenal. Sergi Canos scored a brilliant goal in the 22nd minute while Norgaard scored in the 73rd minute after some comical defending by Arsenal. The Gunners looked all over the place and it was a very poor performance. Brentford go into 6th with the win while Arsenal are 17th with the loss.

Man United 5 vs. 1 Leeds

United got their season off to a flying start at Old Trafford as the 2nd half team struck again. Prior to the game Varane was introduced to the Stamford Bridge crowd for propaganda. Fernandes then scored in the 30th minute to give United the lead. Ayling equalised in the 49th minute thanks to a brilliant long range effort. Greenwood restored United’s lead 3 minutes later and Fernandes made it 3 in the 54th minute. Fernandes completed his hattrick in the 60th minute and Fred rounded matters off with a goal in the 68th minute. Leeds again went gung ho and forgot to defend for large parts of this game. United go top of the table while Leeds are 20th.

Leicester 1 vs. 0 Wolverhampton

Vardy scored in the 41st minute to give Leicester the lead and Leicester held on to it to get the three points. Wolves had a goal disallowed and put pressure but Leicester held on. Leicester sit 9th in the table while Wolves sit 14th in the table.

Watford 3 vs. 2 Aston Villa

Watford played their first game at home as Villa came to Vicarage Road. Dennis scored in the 10th minute to give Watford a surprise lead. Sarr then scored in the 42nd minute to make it 2 for Watford. Hernandez made it 3 for Watford in the 67th minute as it looked like Watford would get a big win. McGinn got one back for Villa in the 70th minute and Ings scored a 97th minute penalty to keep the scoreline respectable. Watford sit 7th in the table while Villa sit 11th in the table. A good start for the Hornets.

Everton 3 vs. 1 Southampton

It was Benitez’s first game as an Everton manager as all eyes were on him with the Saints visiting. New signing Armstrong scored with a good finish to give Southampton the lead in the 22nd minute. Benitez went into half time needing a comeback and the comeback came. Richarlison scored in the 47th minute while Doucoure scored in the 76th minute to give Everton the lead. Calvert-Lewin made it three in the 81st minute to seal the win. Everton sit 5th in the table with the win while Southampton sit 16th in the table. Work to do for Hassenhutl.

Burnley 1 vs. 2 Brighton

Tarkowski scored in the 2nd minute to give Burnley the lead but Brighton mustered a comeback. Maupay scored in the 73rd minute while Mac Allister scored the winner in the 78th minute. Burnley became the first team to lose at home this weekend while Brighton got a win. Burnley sit 12th while Brighton sit 8th in the table.

Norwich 0 vs. 3 Liverpool

Jota scored in the 26th minute to give Liverpool the lead in an even first half. Liverpool’s quality shown through in the 2nd half though as Firmino and Salah scored to seal the win. Norwich sit 19th in the table while Liverpool sit 3rd in the table.

Newcastle 2 vs. 4 West Ham

This was a very entertaining game with some end to end football. Wilson scored in the 5th minute to give Newcastle the lead. Cresswell equalised for West Ham in the 18th minute. Murphy restored Newcastle’s lead in the 40th minute. Benrahma equalised for the Hammers in the 53rd minute. Soucek made it three in the 63rd minute and Antonio sealed the deal in the 66th minute. The penalty that preceded Soucek’s goal was unfair and should not have been given. Newcastle suffer a defeat and sit 15th in the table while West Ham sit 4th.

Tottenham 1 vs. 0 Man City

This game was the Kane game but Tottenham showed grit and desire to hold on and get the three points. City started well but weren’t able to break Spurs down with Nuno setting the team up brilliantly. Son scored what would be the winner in the 55th minute. City had no reply as Nuno got a massive win for himself and Spurs. All eyes are on what City do next as they search for a forward while Spurs and Levy will be extremely happy as they gain more power in the Kane transfer situation. Tottenham sit 10th in the table while City sit 13th. That’s 3 losses in a row for City and 3 games without a goal.

La Liga MW 1

Valencia beat Getafe 1-0, Real Madrid beat Alaves 1-4 in Ancelotti’s first game, Atletico beat Celta Vigo 1-2, Barcelona beat Real Sociedad 4-2, and Sevilla beat Rayo Vallecano 3-0. The top four in La Liga takes shape as usual with Real Madrid, Sevilla, Barcelona, and Atletico making up the top four. Valencia sit 5th in the table. Villarreal are yet to play. Messi or not the teams are doing well and Barcelona in football terms are still a threat. Hazard also looked fit and provided a brilliant assist for Benzema. La Liga off to an interesting start.

Bundesliga MW 1

Monchengladbach drew with Bayern 1-1, Leverkusen drew with Union Berlin 1-1, Dortmund beat Frankfurt 5-2, and Mainz beat Leipzig 1-0. Stuttgart, Hoffenheim, Dortmund, and Köln make up the top four. Leverkusen sit 7th, Bayern sit 8th and Leipzig sit 14th. I am not surprised by Bayern starting poorly because as I said come the end of the season they will have won it. Dortmund starting well is also not a shock because they do it every season. Bundesliga really only becomes interesting post January that is when conclusions can be drawn. Good start for the winning teams though.

Ligue MW 2

Lorient beat Monaco 1-0, Nice thrashed Lille 0-4 with Galtier facing the club he won the league with last season. PSG beat Strasbourg 4-2, Angers beat Lyon 3-0, and Marseille drew with Bordeaux 2-2. Angers, Clermont, PSG and Nice sit in the top four but PSG are already 2 points clear of Nice. The rest have begun to play catch up with PSG. Marseille sit 6th, Monaco sit 14th, Lyon sit 17th and Lille sit 18th. One way traffic in Ligue 1.
