Weekend Football Review

The table is balancing itself out.

Premier League MW 4

Crystal Palace 3 vs. 0 Tottenham

A London derby to begin the weekend as Tottenham visited Selhurst Park to play Palace. All eyes were on Spurs seeking to make it 4 wins a row while Palace were looking for their first win of the season. Tottenham had some injuries and players out due to quarantining so the defence wasn’t at its best. Palace were the dominant side and Dier was injured for Spurs in the 1st half. Tanganga was then sent off for Spurs in the 58th minute which piled on more pressure. Zaha scored a penalty in the 76th minute to give Palace the lead and Edouard came off the bench to make his debut and scored two goals in the final 10 minutes to seal Vieira’s first win. Palace move up to 11th with the win, while Spurs drop down to 7th with the loss. Gallagher was especially good once again.

Watford 0 vs. 2 Wolverhampton

Wolves were looking for their first win as they travelled to London to play Watford who hadn’t won since MW 1. After a close 1st half Wolves pulled through in the 2nd half. Sierralta scored an own goal in the 74th minute to give Wolves the lead and Hwang came off the bench to score in the 83rd minute. Watford drop down to 15th in the table while Wolves climb all the way up into 13th with the win.

Brentford 0 vs. 1 Brighton

This game looked like it was heading for a draw but Trossard scored in the 90th minute to give Brighton the three points. It was a close game and contrary to character both teams struggled to create any clear cut chances. Brentford remain 10th as they suffer their first loss of the season while Brighton move up to 6th with the win.

Arsenal 1 vs. 0 Norwich

A relegation 3 pointer as the two bottom placed teams went head to head searching for their first points of the season. Arsenal were victorious as Aubameyang scored in the 66th minute to seal the win for the Gunners. Arsenal move out of the relegation zone and into 16th with their first points of the season while Norwich move to the bottom of the table and remain the only team without a point this season.

Man United 4 vs. 1 Newcastle

This was of course the Ronaldo game with the legendary player starting and making his debut. Besides that though United were comfortably 2nd best for much of the first half and Newcastle actually looked the better team. Ole’s tenure at United is built on individual brilliance though and United now have the best of the best in that regard. United tapped in a fumbled Greenwood shot right before half time to give United the lead. Manquillo equalised for Newcastle in the 56th minute as Newcastle looked the better team once again but Ronaldo turned up once again and restored United’s lead in the 62nd minute. Fernandes then scored a long range screamer in the 80th minute and Lingard sealed the deal in the 92nd minute. United go top of the table with the win on goal difference while Newcastle drop down into 19th still searching for the first win of the season.

Southampton 0 vs. 0 West Ham

This game was an evenly matched one but Southampton probably had the better chances. Broja especially came on late in the game and hit the post and saw a header cleared of the line by Rice. West Ham then had Antonio sent off right before full time as they were lucky to leave with a point. Southampton gain a point but drop down 14th while West Ham drop down to 8th.

Leicester 0 vs. 1 Man City

This was always going to be a tough game but City battered Leicester and managed to finally score via Bernardo Silva in the 62nd minute. Leicester remain 9th in the table with the loss while City move up to 5th with the win.

Leeds 0 vs. 3 Liverpool

Salah scored in the 20th minute to give Liverpool the lead while Fabinho made it 2 in the 50th minute. Struijk was then sent off for Leeds for a tackle on Elliot which resulted in Elliot suffering a broken leg. The tackle itself was not malicious and the red card probably will be rescinded. Mane then finally scored in the 92nd minute. Leeds drop down to 17th as they search for their first win of the season while Liverpool move into 3rd with the win.

Everton 3 vs. 1 Burnley

Benitez has got Everton quietly chugging along at the top of the table as they notched yet another win. Mee gave Burnley the lead in the 53rd minute but Keane equalised for Everton in the 60th minute. Townsend made it 2 in the 65th minute and Gray sealed the win in the 66th minute. 6 minutes of clinical football from Everton got them 3 points. Everton move into 4th with the win while Burnley drop down into 18th with the loss and still without a win this season.

La Liga MW 4

Atletico beat Espanyol 1-2, Valencia beat Osasuna 1-4, and Real Madrid beat Celta 5-2. Barcelona, Villarreal, and Sevilla did not feature this weekend. Real Madrid, Valencia, and Atletico make up the top 3 with all of them on 10 points. Real Sociedad sit 4th with 9 points. The rest of the big teams of course have a game in hand, but La Liga is looking as entertaining as ever this season.

Serie MW 3

Napoli beat Juventus 2-1, Fiorentina beat Atalanta 1-2, Inter drew with Sampdoria 2-2, Milan beat Lazio 2-0, and Roma beat Sassuolo 2-1. Roma, Milan and Napoli maintain their 100 percent record as they make up the top three. Inter sit 4th with 7 points having drawn. Lazio sit 7th while Atalanta sit 10th in the table. Juventus still winless now sit 16th in the table as Allegri continues to struggle at the beginning of the season. Mourinho managed the 1000th game of his managerial career and with an extra time winner went running into the stands to celebrate with the players and fans. Serie A is going to be blockbuster this season.

Bundesliga MW 4

Dortmund beat Leverkusen 3-4 in a crazy game of football. Wolfsburg continued to chug along with a 0-2 win over Furth. Bayern thrashed Leipzig 1-4 while Monchengladbach beat Arminia 3-1. Wolfsburg still sit top of the table while Bayern, Dortmund, and Mainz make up the top four. Leverkusen sit 6th while Monchengladbach and Leipzig sit 11th and 12th. Bundesliga might seem entertaining in terms of a title race at the moment but it depends on what happens after Christmas and if teams can keep up with Bayern’s consistency.

Ligue MW 5

Lorient beat Lille 2-1, PSG beat Clermont 4-0, Marseille beat Monaco 0-2, and Lyon beat Strasbourg 3-1. PSG sit 4 points clear at the top of the table. Angers, Marseille, and Nice make up the top four. Lyon move up to 7th while Lille sit 12th and Monaco sit 16th. PSG are already running away with the title while the likes of Lille and Monaco are struggling to get a win. Messi hasn’t even started a game yet.
