Tottenham 0 vs. 3 Chelsea MW 5 Review

Tuchel masterclass!

Chelsea travelled to the nearby Tottenham to play a London Derby as we looked to keep pace with Liverpool and United at the top of the table. Tottenham seemed to have injuries before the game but a lot of key players were back with the likes of Romero, Dier, Son, all starting the game. On paper this looked like a decent Spurs side. Tuchel brought Kepa in with Mendy suffering an injury while Christensen, Silva, and Rudiger started in defence. Azpilicueta, Jorginho, Kovacic, and Alonso started as the wing backs and midfielders while Mount, Havertz, and Lukaku started up front. A solid lineup all around and the game was ready to begin.

Spurs started the better team and were on Chelsea from the get go. Spurs out pressed and out ran the Blues and that resulted in some half chances as well. Spurs had the majority of possession as well and the likes of Kepa, Silva, and Christensen were forced into making some good saves and blocks. Up front Mount, and Havertz continued to struggle. The intensity in pressing was missing and the passing was well below par by both players. It was a decent first half from the Blues but the fact that our defence and goalkeeper had had brilliant halves was not something to celebrate about.

Tuchel rang the change at half time with Mount coming off for Kante. At the time I didn’t understand the decision because on the face of it we took off yet another forward player for a defensive minded one but Tuchel knows better and I am a simpleton. The extra midfielder allowed Chelsea to grab hold of the midfield and dictate the game. We started to push the likes of Alonso higher up the pitch and we began to dominate possession. The first goal came in the 49th minute as Silva rose highest from an Alonso corner to make it 0-1. A brilliant header. Chelsea then had a shot saved off the line by Dier as the pressure began to pile on. Kante made it 0-2 in the 57th minute as his strike from distance took a big deflection off of Dier and went past Lloris. Werner then came on for the final 20 minutes and began to cause havoc. Silva had a header brilliantly saved by Lloris. Lukaku then sent Werner through on goal but the German fumbled with his feet. Lloris then made a couple of good saves from Werner, and Alonso. Lukaku had a header find Lloris. Lukaku then sent off Kovacic through on goal but Kovacic took the wrong decision and got a corner. Werner was able to gather the corner late on and drilled a ball into box that found Rudiger who made it 3 to get a big win for Tuchel and co. After the 2nd half was over Chelsea had 20 shots and 10 on target with all of the 10 coming in the 2nd half. It was utter dominance.

Chelsea Team Review

Goalkeeper

Kepa had to come in for Mendy and had a good game. Kepa was gathering balls, was vocal, his distribution was good and he came out to sweep on a couple of occasions as well. A clean sheet was all the Spaniard could ask for and he got that. A very good performance.

Defenders

The back three had another brilliant game. Christensen continues to excel at the back and maintained his usual levels. Silva was man of the match for me, Son was in his pocket the whole game and it was just amazing how he always anticipated the movement and then walked back to his position with elegance. Rudiger was also brilliant and also got a goal to his name. Azpilicueta had a solid game while Alonso got an assist and probably should have had a goal or two as well. Keeping clean sheets and scoring goals. What a sight.

Midfielders

Jorginho and Kovacic had a decent first half but really came into life when Kante came on in the 2nd half. The extra midfielder allowed each of them more space and time to dictate the game. Kante was brilliant and got a goal to his name as well. Mount had a quiet game once again but it’s nothing to overreact about. Players go through a lull in form and Mount will be back to his best.

Forwards

Havertz had a quiet game as well and similar to Mount it happens. Lukaku had a quiet first half but was great in the 2nd and probably should have had 2 assists and goal to his name. Werner came on for 20 minutes and had a brilliant cameo. Should have scored but got an assist for the final goal as well. Werner and Lukaku linked up well and it is something I want to see more of.

Manager

Thomas Tuchel saw the problem at half time and made the change which changed the game. It was a masterclass move and it really shows how good a manager he is. Another win but Tuchel won’t be happy about the first half performance and will demand more from the players. Much work still to do.

Chelsea got top of the table alphabetically as Liverpool have the exact same record as us in our 5 games. It was a big win and another step in the right direction. Next is a visit by Villa in the Carabao Cup as we look to rest some players and progress in that competition. COME ON CHELSEA!!!
