Weekend Football Review

An exciting race!

Premier League MW 5

Newcastle 1 vs. 1 Leeds

Raphinha scored in the 13th minute to give Leeds the lead but Saint-Maximin scored right before half time to equalise for Newcastle. It was an end to end game with both teams having several shots on goal but neither team could get the winner. Newcastle move up one place into 18th in the table while Leeds remain 17th in the table. Both teams are still searching for their first win of the season.

Wolverhampton 0 vs. 2 Brentford

Toney scored in the 28th minute via a penalty and Mbeumo got a 2nd for Brentford in the 34th minute. Baptiste was sent off for Brentford in the 64th minute but the Bees held on for 3 vital points. Wolves were supposed to start racking up the wins given their tough start to the season but having played well in those games. Lage will hope that this is a blip but he will know his players have to start scoring goals. Wolves drop down to 16th with the loss while Brentford move into 9th with the win.

Norwich 1 vs. 3 Watford

Dennis gave Watford the lead in the 17th minute but Pukki equalised for Norwich in the 35th minute. Sarr got a double in the 2nd half to give Watford the win and 3 big points. The game overall was evenly balanced but Watford were the clinical team and got the job done. Norwich remain bottom of the table with 5 straight losses and Farke will be thinking whether this is deja vu once again. Watford move up to 11th with the win.

Burnley 0 vs. 1 Arsenal

Odegaard scored the only goal of the game in the 30th minute via a free kick as Arsenal ground out the game for another 1-0 win. The game itself was an even one with both teams having similar chances on goal and even possession. Burnley drop down to 19th with the loss and remain without a win this season. Arsenal get a 2nd win to their name and move up to 13th with the win.

Man City 0 vs. 0 Southampton

A surprise result as City were held to a goalless draw against Southampton. Southampton could and probably should have won the game as they were awarded a penalty and Walker was given a red only for both to be cancelled by VAR. City huffed and puffed by Southampton stayed strong. City remain 5th in the table with the point but now 3 points behind leaders Chelsea. Southampton drop down into 15th but now have 4 successive draws.

Liverpool 3 vs. 0 Crystal Palace

Mane scored right before half time to break a stubborn Palace performance. Salah and Keita scored in the 2nd half to seal the deal for the home team. Liverpool were always going to win as they move up into 2nd while Palace drop down into 14th with the loss.

Aston Villa 3 vs. 0 Everton

This game was stuck in a rut for about 60 minutes but then Cash turned up in the 66th to smash Villa into the lead. Digne scored an own goal and Bailey got the 3rd as Villa got a big win against Everton. Villa move up to 10th with the win, while Everton suffer their first defeat of the season and drop down into 6th.

Brighton 2 vs. 1 Leicester

Maupay scored a 35th minute penalty to give Brighton the lead while Welbeck made it 2 in the 50th minute. Vardy got one back for Leicester in the 61st minute but Brighton held on for the win. Potter and Brighton are silently getting the job done as they move into 4th with the win over a Leicester team that are expected to challenge the top four once again. Leicester continue to have a shaky start to the season as they drop down to 12th with the loss.

West Ham 1 vs. 2 Man United

Benrahma gave West Ham the lead in the 30th minute after what had been an onslaught on their defence by United. The goal was heavily deflected but the Hammers would not complain. It was short lived though as United responded well and equalised via Ronaldo as he put a rebound past Fabianski. The game looked like it was heading for a draw but Lingard came off the bench to score a stunner in the 89th minute to give United the lead. Shaw then hand balled to concede a penalty and Moyes brought on Noble to take it but his penalty was saved by De Gea for United to hold on to the 3 points. It was an insane game with insane refereeing but United fans won’t complain. West Ham remain 8th in the table and suffer their first loss of the season and their fans will be frustrated by that Moyes decision. United drop down to 3rd on goal difference but remain level on points with Liverpool and Chelsea.

La Liga MW 5

Atletico drew with Bilbao 0-0, Villarreal drew with Mallorca 0-0, Sevilla drew with Real Sociedad 0-0, Real beat Valencia 1-2, and Barcelona are yet to play. Big weekend for Real with all the other teams dropping points. Ancelotti and company go clear at the top by 2 points with Atletico, Valencia, and Real Sociedad making up the top four. Sevilla sit 6th, while Villarreal sit 14th in the table. If Barcelona win they could move up to 3rd in the table. Real Madrid and Ancelotti are looking far from convincing defensively but are managing to get the job done up front with Benzema in form once again.

Serie MW 4

Inter thrashed Bologna 6-1, Atalanta beat Salernitana 0-1, Lazio drew with Cagliari 2-2, Roma lost to Verona 3-2, Milan drew with Juventus 1-1, and Napoli are yet to play. Inter and Milan remain level on points at the top of the table with Roma falling short and dropping to 3rd. Napoli are yet to play and sit 4th but a win could take them to first in the table and 2 points clear. Lazio sit 6th, Atalanta 8th, and Juventus drop into the relegation zone as they sit 18th and winless. The Milan teams are leading Serie A once again with Roma and Mourinho on their coat tails. Juventus on the other hand are struggling and Allegri is having a tough time in Turin.

Bundesliga MW 5

Bayern thrashed Bochum 7-0, Augsburg beat Monchengladbach 1-0, Leipzig drew with Koln 1-1, Leverkusen beat Stuttgart 1-3, Dortmund beat Union Berlin 4-2, and Wolfsburg drew with Frankfurt 1-1. Bayern go top of the Bundesliga on goal difference with Wolfsburg dropping down to 2nd. Dortmund remain 3rd a point behind the two while Leverkusen sit 4th. Leipzig sit 12th in the table while Monchengladbach sit 16th. Bayern continue to impose their dominance and one wonders if anyone will remove them from the top from now until the end of the season.

Ligue MW 6

Lens beat Lille 1-0, Monaco beat Nice 2-2, Marseille beat Rennes 2-0 and PSG beat Lyon 2-1 thanks to a late Icardi goal. PSG go 5 points clear at the top of Ligue 1 with Marseille, Lens, and Angers making up the top four. Lyon sit 9th, Monaco sit 14th and Lille sit 15th in the table. It’s been a poor start for all of the would be challengers and PSG do look like they will run away with the league having not even played that well this season.
