Chelsea 0 vs. 1 Man City MW 6 Review

Not our day.

Chelsea took on Man City at Stamford Bridge on Saturday for what was the first game of the MW. Early kick-off’s are never the best and it would turn out to be another bummer of a Saturday. Pep started with his favoured team this time in a 4-3-3 formation and stuck with what his team does best. Chelsea and Tuchel stuck changed it up a bit with Mendy in goal, and a back three of Azpilicueta, Christensen, and Rudiger. Reece James and Alonso started as the wing backs while Kovacic, Kante, and Jorginho all started in the midfield. Werner, and Lukaku started up front. Starting all three of our more defensive midfielders would turn out to be the problem when 90 minutes came around.

The first half was all City with Chelsea defending deep in our half. We found the out ball via Werner on a couple of occasions but we were not able to take those chances. Reece James then had to come off after an ankle issue and he was replaced by Thiago Silva with Azpilicueta moving to right wing back. The first half ended with Chelsea on the back foot but having defended well the game still level. City scored in the second half via a deflection as Jesus gave them the lead in the 53rd minute. Kante was brought off for Kai Havertz and while it left us a bit more open defensively we began to attack more. We had a goal disallowed due to offside and we began to test Ederson more. The final change was Loftus-Cheek for Jorginho and that again helped us gain control of the midfield. Sadly though City held strong and Chelsea were not able to find that equaliser.

Chelsea Team Review

Mendy did well and the goal was not his fault. No clean sheet this time but not much else to talk about. Some key saves that kept the scoreline from being embarrassing in the first half.

All three of the back three did well in the first half and the deflection was not on them. It was a bummer to see Reece James come off and all we can do is hope that the injury isn’t a serious one. Nothing stand out but nothing to panic about. Just one of those days.

Jorginho, Kante, and Kovacic did not win the midfield battle in this game. It was a tricky half for them in the first 45 and we were 2nd best too much of the open balls. The pressing was also missing. RLC did really well when he came on and he was probably the shining light of the game. Ruben is looking more and more like the player from 2018-19 and it is good to see. Long may it continue.

Lukaku and Werner were detached in the first half with no one their to connect the midfield to the attack. Havertz coming on did help and we created more chances. Werner did well to try and release pressure with his pace and create some sort of chance. Better days to come for our forward department.

Tuchel vs. Pep stands at 3-1 and look you lose some and you win some. It was a close game and City were the better team and Tuchel will know that. Like the German said there is plenty of work to do.

Chelsea sit 3rd in the Premier League table just a point behind leaders Liverpool and frankly after the opening 6 games we had that is a good sign. We have a good set of fixtures now and it is time to go on a run. Next up is a trip to Turin to play Juventus in the Champions League, COME ON CHELSEA!!!.
