Chelsea welcome Southampton to Stamford Bridge on Saturday for what is a big game for Tuchel and co. Two defeats in a row to City and Juventus have left Chelsea needing to bounce back. This also happens to be the final game before another international break so ending this period on a high will be the most important thing for the team. Chelsea will come up against a Southampton side that sit 16th in the table with 4 draws and 2 losses to their name. Southampton had lost their last four before losing last weekend. Hassenhutl and the Saints have done well though and fought hard to get a point at Manchester City recently. Hassenhutl sides are well known for having high intensity and pressing etc and that is all evident in this Southampton side. Eventually they will move up the table.
Tuchel pre match was asked about the 2 losses and he said that they were close losses that came on fine margins. City did play better than Chelsea while Juventus were tough opponents. Tuchel said that while we did lose, if we had taken chances the narrative would have been completely different. Tuchel was also asked about Lukaku and his isolated performances. Tuchel said that Lukaku still had to build that relationship with the players around him and that the results would come eventually. Other than that Tuchel was asked about Mason and his absence and Tuchel said it played a part but nothing more than the absence of Reece, Pulisic, and Kante plays a part on the team.
Chelsea Team Preview
Reece James, Kante, and Pulisic remain out for Tuchel and Chelsea. Mason Mount is back which is a big plus. Mendy should start in goal with a back three of Chalobah, Christensen, and Rudiger. Azpilicueta and Chilwell should start as the wing backs in this game. Chilwell played well in the 2nd half against Juventus and with Livramento on the same side we need someone who can stand a chance against his pace. I would start Kovacic, and Loftus-Cheek in the midfield because Jorginho looked a bit tired and RLC has looked good in that no 6 role in recent games. Mason, Werner, and Lukaku should start up front. I still think our best chance of scoring goals is when Werner and Lukaku play together and the intensity that Mason provides is also key. Hopefully everyone selected can put in a top performance that has been lacking in recent games.
Southampton Team Preview
Broja, and Stephens will be the only players unavailable for the game against us. Broja because he is on loan from Chelsea and cannot play against his parent club. McCarthy should start in goal with a back four of Livramento, Salisu, Bednarek, and Walker-Peters. Elyounoussi, Romeu, Ward-Prowse, and Redmond should form the midfield with Armstrong, and Adams up front. Livramento has been causing havoc down the right hand side for the Saints while the likes of Redmond, and Ward-Prowse provide that threat form midfield. Up front Amrstrong has started well for the Saint since his move in the summer as he tries to create a partnership with Adams. It’s a good team with a lot of willing runners who press high and counter with pace.
Starting XI Prediction
This game has all of a sudden taken more importance after the two defeats. Chelsea weren’t poor in those games but we lacked that chemistry up front and we need to start finding that. The lineup I have predicted should provide a good mix of that. Not an easy game but one we are capable of winning. COME ON CHELSEA!!!
