Weekend Football Preview

We are back!

Premier League MW 8

Watford vs. Liverpool

15th placed Watford entertain 2nd placed Liverpool to kick off the weekend’s football.  Liverpool drew against City before the international break while Watford will look to bounce back with new manager Ranieri at the helm. Liverpool might without Firmino and Alisson depending on whether they can return in time from Brazil. Watford were decent but it will be interesting to see how Ranieri tinkers with the side. Early kick-offs always cause an upset and maybe Watford can get something out of this game.

Southampton vs. Leeds

17th placed Southampton have lost their last two and are still searching for their first win of the season as they take on 16th placed Leeds who finally managed their first win before the international break. Not much separates the two sides on the pitch and Southampton have probably been the more impressive of the two teams. It should be an open game of football and the result could go either way.

Norwich vs. Brighton

Norwich sit bottom of the league with a single point and are still searching for their first win as they are visited by 6th placed Brighton. Brighton have drawn their last two but are in brilliant form this season and having finally managed to score goals they are kicking about in the top half of the table. Pressure is on Farke to get the results going but Brighton are playing well and it will be another tough task.

Aston Villa vs. Wolverhampton

10th placed Villa take on 12th placed Wolves in another even game. Two teams that had slow starts to the season but managed to pick up the pace before the international break and are now looking to move further up the table. Smith and Lage have got their teams playing good football and now those teams are converting their chances as well. This should be another entertaining game.

Leicester vs. Man United

Leicester sit 13th in the table as they welcome United who sit 4th in the table. Rodgers and co have not started the season well and are winless in their last three while Ole is in a similar boat and begins a tough run of fixtures with this game. Rodgers I feel would have worked hard during the break to get the team performing again and they will be ready to go at home against a United side that looks disjointed. Many will say that this is when Ole comes out fighting and gets results but  that wheel has to break at some point. Leicester are more than capable of getting something out of this game.

Man City vs. Burnley

3rd placed Man City take on 18th placed Burnley who are still without a win this season. City should win this game but Dyche and Burnley as usual will make it a difficult game.

Everton vs. West Ham

5th placed Everton take on 9th placed West Ham as Moyes returns to his old club. Benitez has done a good job of getting results at his new club and is looking to move into the top four with a win. West Ham have been inconsistent this season but are still a good side that is more than capable of getting a result. This should be a fun game to watch albeit with opposing styles of play.

Newcastle vs. Tottenham

19th placed Newcastle are without a win this season but are now one of the riches clubs in the world after Mike Ashley sold the club to Amanda Stavely and her Saudi backed takeover. Bruce is still the manager and any change would come during the January window one would expect but this will be the first chance for the fans to celebrate this moment in the stadium. The unlucky team to visit is Tottenham who sit 8th and finally managed to win before the international break after 3 successive losses. Newcastle have played well in their games and I think they have been slightly unlucky but on paper Tottenham are the way better team albeit on the pitch they are woeful. This should be a fun game to watch just for the occasion and to see the Newcastle fans celebrate but I think Newcastle could win this one.

Arsenal vs. Crystal Palace

A London derby on Monday as Patrick Vieira takes his Palace side to his old club Arsenal. Arsenal sit 11th in the table are unbeaten in their last four while Palace 14th in the table with one win but 4 draws as well. Palace had a shaky start to the season but Vieira has done well to steady the ship and get them playing some good football. Arteta has done the same at Arsenal and once he had his first choice eleven the results started to trickle in. Another great game of football is expected and the result could go either way.

La Liga MW 9

Sevilla travel to Celta Vigo, Villarreal take on Osasuna, and Barcelona take on Valencia. Real, Atletico, and Real Sociedad sit level at the top of the table with 17 points. Sevilla sit 4th in the table having played a game less. Valencia, and Barcelona sit 8th and 9th in the table with Barcelona in particular poor form although they have also played a game less. Villarreal sit 11th in the table. The race in Spain might have lost its biggest stars but it is still an entertaining one and the winner looks like it could come from anywhere at the moment. Real are heavily reliant on Benzema while Barcelona have their problems. The rest are getting the business done on the side and going under the radar. A big weekend for the likes of Sevilla, and Barcelona.

Serie MW 8

Inter travel to Lazio, Milan take on Verona, Atalanta travel to Empoli, Napoli take on Torino, and Juventus take on Roma. Napoli are two points clear at the top of Serie A followed by Milan, Inter, and Roma. Lazio sit 6th while Juventus sit 7th in the table. Atalanta are 8th. Spalletti and co have won all 7 of their games and will be looking to take advantage of the situation by winning this weekend as well. Inter, Juventus, Roma, and Lazio all play each other so it’s a good chance for Milan, and Atalanta to make up ground on the rest. It’s a fun race in Italy and it’s probably the most entertaining league at the moment after the Premier League.

Bundesliga MW 8

Wolfsburg travel to Union Berlin, Dortmund play Mainz, Leipzig travel to Freiburg, Monchengladbach play Stuttgart, and Bayern travel to play Leverkusen. Bayern and Leverkusen lead the pack and are level on points at the top of the table as they play each other this weekend. Dortmund sit 3rd while Freiburg sit 4th. Wolfsburg are 5th while Leipzig sit 8th, and Monchengladbach sit 10th. A big weekend for the top of the table as Bayern will be looking to bounce back after their loss before the international break. All the other teams can do at the moment is keep pace with them and if Leverkusen can take points off of them then it helps the rest as well.

Ligue MW 10

PSG play Angers, Lille travel to Clermont, Lyon play Monaco, and Marseille travel to Lorient. PSG are still 6 points clear at the top of the table having lost their first game before the international break. Lens, Nice, and Angers make up the top four, while Marseille, and Monaco sit 5th and 6th. Lille are 8th while Lyon are 10th. The league is PSG’s to lose and Messi hasn’t even scored a goal for them in the league yet. Angers are in the top four but I doubt they can cause an upset but the rest will be hoping that PSG do drop points because most of them have had poor starts to the season.
