Like playing an expensive Burnley.
Chelsea took on Manchester United at Stamford Bridge on Sunday for MW 13 of the Premier League season. Carrick selected a defensive lineup for this game with De Gea in goal and a back four of Wan Bissaka, Lindelof, Bailly, and Telles. Matic, McTominay, and Fred started in the midfield with a front three of Rashford, Bruno, and Sancho. Surprisingly Ronaldo was dropped to the bench but it was clear to see that United would very much play on the counter. Tuchel selected a solid lineup for the game with Mendy in goal, a back three of Chalobah, Silva, and Rudiger and a midfield two of Jorginho, and Loftus-Cheek. James, and Alonso started as the wing backs with a front three of Hudson-Odoi, Ziyech, and Werner. Some surprises to not see Mount start but no shocks other than that.
The 1st half was pretty much all Chelsea. Ziyech started proceedings with an effort getting saved by De Gea in the 3rd minute. Hudson-Odoi then had a great opportunity to score but rather than square it to Werner he tried to finesse De Gea and the Spaniard made the save. Rudiger then hit a shot off the bar in the 31st minute, Hudson-Odoi then had another good chance to score but his shot was tame. Reece James then curled an effort but missed the target and we went close yet again but the header was saved by De Gea. It’s safe to say that United parked the bus well in the 1st half while Chelsea dominated and created chances but they were off target along with poor decision making in the final 3rd.
Chelsea began the 2nd half where they left off the 1st with Werner getting a shot off but seeing it blocked by Lindelof. United then opened the scoring in the 50th minute after Jorginho failed to take down a loose ball properly and Sancho latched onto the ricochet to finish past Mendy. A goal entirely of Chelsea’s making and that was United’s first shot on target. Werner then went close yet again in the 58th minute but instead of using his left foot he volleyed it with his right and missed the target entirely. Wan Bissaka brought down Silva in the box in the 67th minute to concede a penalty and Jorginho stepped up to equalise and redeem himself. Wan Bissaka then made a block off of Werner once again. Mendy then made a poor pass to send the ball straight to Fred but the Brazilian did not know what to do and passed it back to Mendy. It also registered as a shot on target completing United’s total of 2. Ziyech had a shot but it hit McTominay right in the face. The final chance came in the 97th minute as Ziyech did well to send Pulisic down the right hand side and he hooked in a cross to find Rudiger who was open but volleyed it above the United goal. The game ended 1-1 to many Chelsea fans frustration.
Chelsea Team Review
No clean sheet for Mendy in this game which was not his fault. Mendy though was a bit sloppy with his passing in this game and could have gifted United a goal himself if it weren’t for Fred.
All the defenders did well in this game and the goal that was conceded was not on them. Reece James had a quiet game on the right hand side though and while Alonso was decent but his lack of pace damaged the fluidity for sure. Rudiger went close and could have done better to at least get his shot on target.
Jorginho was great in the 1st half and controlled the game well passing it around what United called a press. The United goal was his fault but he did step up to take the penalty and equalise for Chelsea. Loftus-Cheek was not at his best in this game but he did get better in the 2nd half. Mount came on in the 2nd half as well but found little time to impact the game.
Hudson-Odoi had a decent game but should have been more clinical and he along with Werner probably had the best chances of the game. Both should have done better and Timo with United’s deep block really didn’t have a chance of using his pace. Ziyech was arguably the best of the poor attackers and he did press well and create chances. The passing was frustrating at times from the Moroccan but that is what comes with someone like him. Not at all the worst on the pitch from an attacking perspective. Pulisic came on in the 2nd half and impacted well and should have got an assist. Lukaku had a 10 minute cameo but didn’t have any real impact as he gets up to speed once again.
Tuchel said he was pleased with the performance and I agree that at least in the buildup and about 80 percent of the pitch we were very good. The attacking aspect needs to improve though and our forward players need to be more clinical in front of goal. All of them are fit now and it is up to them to build chemistry and start scoring goals. The substitutions could have happened a bit sooner though.
Chelsea remain top of the table by a point as we will now have to wait until 2022 to beat United at Stamford Bridge. It’s a run which is extremely frustrating when we consider it was Ole, and Carrick we could not beat. Anyways we move on and next up is Watford. COME ON CHELSEA!!!
