Weekend Football Review

Liverpool and Man City take advantage.

Premier League MW 13

Arsenal 2 vs. 0 Newcastle

Goals from Saka and Martinelli in the 2nd half were enough to see Arsenal get three points against Newcastle and bounce back from their loss against Liverpool. Arsenal remain 5th in the table but go level with West Ham who sit 4th. Newcastle remain bottom of the table and without a win this season. No team has survived relegation after having 6 points in their first 13 games so if Eddie Howe does manage to keep Newcastle up it will be a great accomplishment. At the moment Newcastle are 6 points from safety.

Liverpool 4 vs. 0 Southampton

Jota scored two in the first half and Thiago scored another as Liverpool took a 3-0 lead over Southampton. Van Dijk got a 4th in the 2nd half to seal the win for Liverpool. Liverpool remain 3rd in the table 2 points behind Chelsea. Southampton drop down to 15th with the loss.

Norwich 0 vs. 0 Wolverhampton

Neither team could break the other down in the game as they both shared a point. Norwich remain 19th but are now 3 games unbeaten and 3 from safety. Wolves remain 6th in the table and 3 points from top four.

Crystal Palace 1 vs. 2 Aston Villa

An entertaining game for sure. Targett scored in the 15th minute to give Villa the lead and McGinn scored in the 86th minute to seal the win for Villa because Palace got one back in extra time thanks to Guehi. Palace drop down to 11th with the loss while Villa move up to 13th as Gerrard makes it 2 wins in 2.

Brighton 0 vs. 0 Leeds

Another story of two teams not being able to take their chances as points were shared between them. Brighton remain 9th in the table with the point and still without a win in several games. Leeds remain 17th in the table with the point and 3 points above the relegation zone.

Brentford 1 vs. 0 Everton

Toney scored a penalty in the 24th minute as Brentford held on for all three points against Everton. Brentford move up to 12th with the win finally ending their streak without one. Everton drop down to 14th and Benitez is under pressure now for this team to start winning games.

Man City 2 vs. 1 West Ham

It was a snowy game in Manchester as the two teams played it out for 3 points. Gundogan gave Man City the lead in the 33rd minute and Fernandinho got one more for City in the 90th minute. Sadly for West Ham Lanzini got one back for them in the 94th minute but the damage had already been done. City remain 2nd but go within a point of Chelsea while West Ham remain 4th but are now level on points with 5th placed Arsenal.

Leicester 4 vs. 2 Watford

Maddison scored in the 16th minute to give Leicester the lead against Watford. King scored a penalty in the 30th minute to equalise for the Hornets. Vardy then got a quick fire double before half time to give Leicester a 3-1 lead. Dennis got one back for Watford in the 61st minute but Lookman made it four for Leicester in the 68th minute. Leicester get a much needed win as they move to 10th in the table while Watford remain 16th with the loss.

Burnley Postponed Tottenham

This game was called off due to the snow storm and will be played at a later time. Both teams have a game in hand now.

La Liga MW 15

Valencia drew with Rayo Vallecano 1-1, Barcelona beat Villarreal 1-3 in a big win for Xavi, Espanyol beat Real Sociedad 1-0, Atletico beat Cadiz 1-4, and Real Madrid beat Sevilla 2-1. Real got four points clear at the top of the table with a game in hand while Atletico sit 2nd with a game in hand as well. Real Sociedad drop down to 3rd and have no game in hand while Sevilla remain 4th with a game in hand. Barcelona move up to 7th now four games unbeaten and also have a game in hand. Villarreal drop down to 12th. Advantage Real Madrid at the moment but Barcelona are climbing up the table while Atletico are keeping pace. Race for the title very much alive and running.

Serie MW 14

Atalanta beat Juventus 0-1, Inter beat Venezia 0-2, Sassuolo beat Milan 1-3, Roma beat Torino 1-0, and Napoli thrashed Lazio 4-0. Napoli go 3 points clear at the top of the table after beating their former manager Sarri. Milan remain 2nd but only by a point as they suffer their 2nd loss of the season. Inter sit 3rd a point behind Milan while Atalanta sit 4th 3 points behind Inter. Roma move up to 5th with the win 3 points behind Atalanta while Juventus sit 7th and Lazio sit 8th. Juventus’s inconsistent season continues while Mourinho gets an important win after a series of poor results. Sarri also needs to pick up the pace at Lazio. Advantage Napoli for now.

Bundesliga MW 13

Koln beat Monchengladbach 4-1, Hoffenheim beat Furth 3-6, Dortmund beat Wolfsburg 1-3, Bayern beat Arminia 1-0, and Leverkusen beat Leipzig 1-3. Bayern remain top of the table by a point with Dortmund, Leverkusen and Freiburg making up the top four. Hoffenheim move up to 5th with the win while Wolfsburg and Leipzig sit 7th and 8th. Monchengladbach sit 11th in the table. Bayern remain in the lead but Dortmund are doing well at the moment to keep up the pace.

Ligue MW 15

Lille drew with Nantes 1-1, PSG beat St.Etienne 1-3 but Neymar suffered an injury and will be out for some time, Monaco drew with Strasbourg, Lyon beat Montpellier 0-1, and Marseille beat Troyes 1-0. PSG sit 12 points clear at the top of the table with Rennes, Nice, and Marseille making up the top four. Lyon sit 7th in the table with Monaco 9th and Lille 13th. It’s safe to say that Ligue 1 is a foregone conclusion and the big names are struggling to finish in Europe as well.
