Weekend Football Review

Brilliant games all around!

Champions League Quarter-Finals

Barcelona 2 vs. 8 Bayern Munich

Annihilation that is the one word I would use for this game. Barcelona have been on a downward curve for quite a few seasons now and the Champions League has been a source of sorrow for them every year. This year the club hit rock bottom as Bayern ruined them. It took 4 minutes for Muller to give Bayern the lead but 3 minutes later Barcelona equalised through a Alaba own goal. It was all Bayern though as the regained the lead in the 21st minute through Perisic. Gnabry made it 3 6 minutes later with another brilliant goal from Bayern. Muller made it 4 in the 31st minute as Barcelona looked lost. Suarez got one back for Barcelona in the 57th minute and it was a good goal but it only spurred Bayern on. Kimmich made it 5 in the 63rd minute, Lewandowski got his goal and a 6th in the 82nd minute. The final nail on Barcelona’s coffin was Coutinho coming off the bench to add two more goals for Bayern playing on loan from Barcelona. Bayern are the clear favourites and I have been since we played them in the 1st leg. It was great to see Coutinho get some redemption after the way he has been treated at Barcelona. Barcelona themselves need to hit the hard reset button, changes from head to toe if they want to reach their historic heights again because that was a shocking night.

Man City 1 vs. 3 Lyon

The Bayern game was great to see but it wasn’t an upset because anyone who has seen Bayern always knew they were favourites for that game. The upset came in the Man City game as Pep yet again dropped out of the Champions League this time against Lyon. Cornet gave Lyon the lead in the 24th minute after Ederson had come out and he had curled it past him. Lyon held firm for much of the game but City never looked like they were going to get back into the game until the 2nd half when Pep made a few changes. De Bruyne equalised in the 69th minute and it looked like City would go on to win but Lyon had other plans. Dembele came off the bench to restore the lead for Lyon in the 79th minute and he got his 2nd in the 87th minute in great fashion. Sterling missed an open goal and a chance to equalise and the Lyon went right down the other end and got the 3rd. 1 billion plus spent in total, 400 million spent on defenders and always faltering in Europe, Pep and City have a lot of thinking to do in the summer. The solution for them will probably be to go out and spend more cash. Lyon have done really well and reach the semi’s but that is the final stage they will reach because Bayern can’t lose this now.

Europa League Semi-Finals

Sevilla 2 vs. 1 Man United

Not a great weekend for Manchester as United dropped out of the Europa League as Sevilla the Europa kings reached yet another final. Fernandes gave United the lead in the 9th minute after they used their penalty voucher which cost them because they played it too early. After the goal it was all Sevilla as they grew into the game and Suso equalised in the 26th minute. The 2nd half saw United get a bucket load of chances but Sevilla keeper Bono had turned into prime Casillas as he saved everything in front of goal, the players defended brilliantly and their winning goal came in the 78th minute. Luuk De Jong was open in the penalty box and he tapped in the winner. United’s main problem is that they have a decent first 11 but if they don’t perform there is no one else for them. They need depth on all front’s but their attack is their best asset and I don’t think spending 120 million on Sancho is the best idea for them.
