Weekend Football Review

City take the lead!

Premier League MW 15

Newcastle 1 vs. 0 Burnley

Callum Wilson got the only goal of the game in the 40th minute as Newcastle got their first win of the season against fellow survival contenders Burnley. Newcastle move into 19th but level on points with Burnley and Norwich and 3 points from safety. Burnley cannot create a gap and they are right back into the thick of things.

Wolverhampton 0 vs. 1 Liverpool

This game was heading for a draw with Wolves having done well in defence and Liverpool having struggled to finish. Origi though had other plans and he came off the bench to score the winner in the 94th minute to give Klopp all three points. Wolves remain 8th in the table with the point while Liverpool move up to 2nd in the table a point above Chelsea and a point behind Man City.

Southampton 1 vs. 1 Brighton

Broja scored in the 29th minute to give Southampton the lead against Brighton. Southampton were so close to the win but Maupay equalised for Brighton in the 98th minute to get a point for Brighton and draw yet another game. Southampton remain 16th in the table while Brighton remain 9th and have now drawn 4 of their last 5 games.

Watford 1 vs. 3 Man City

Sterling scored in the 4th minute to give Man City the lead while Bernardo Silva scored a brilliant goal in the 31st minute to make it 2. Silva got a 2nd in the 63rd minute to make it 3. Hernandez got one back for Watford but other than that it was a complete performance from Man City. Watford remain 17th in the table 3 points above the relegation zone while Man City go top of the table for the first time this season.

Leeds 2 vs. 2 Brentford

Roberts gave Leeds the lead in the 27th minute while Baptiste equalised for Brentford in the 54th minute. Canos then gave Brentford the lead in the 61st minute and yet again a team thought they were heading for 3 points but Bamford came off the bench to equalise for Leeds in the 95th minute. Leeds remain 15th in the table while Brentford drop down to 13th with the point.

Man United 1 vs. 0 Crystal Palace

This was Rangnick’s first game in charge of Man United but Palace did quiet well against a United team that played well but looked tired after 30 minutes. The game winning goal came in the 77th minute with a curled effort from Fred. United go up to 6th in the table 3 points from 4th while Palace drop down to 14th with a 3rd successive loss.

Tottenham 3 vs. 0 Norwich

Moura scored in the 1st half while Sanchez and Son added two more in the 2nd half to give Tottenham a comfortable 3-0 win over Norwich. Tottenham move up to 5th in the table and sit 2 points behind West Ham with a game in hadn’t while Norwich drop to the bottom of the table in what is Dean Smith’s first loss but are only 3 points from safety.

Aston Villa 2 vs. 1 Leicester

Barnes scored in the 14th minute to give Leicester the lead but Konsa equalised 3 minutes later for Villa. Konsa got the winner for Villa in the 54th minute to return them to winning ways. Villa move up to 10th in the table with what is Gerrard’s 3rd win in 4 games while Leicester drop into 11th with the loss.

Everton 2 vs. 1 Arsenal

This was a must win game for Everton and Benitez having not won in 9 and this was a must win game for Arsenal after the loss to Man United. Richarlison had a goal disallowed by VAR in the 1st half before Odegaard went and gave Arsenal the lead right before half time. Richarlison then had another goal chalked off by VAR in the 2nd half but finally got a successful one in the 79th minute to equalise for Everton. Gray scored a brilliant goal in the 92nd minute to get the win for Everton. Everton move up to 12th with the win while Arsenal drop down to 7th with the loss.

La Liga MW 16

Sevilla beat Villarreal 1-0, Real Betis beat Barcelona 0-1, Mallorca beat Atletico 1-2, Real Madrid beat Real Sociedad 0-2, and Valencia beat Celta Vigo 1-2. Real Madrid go 8 points clear at the top of the league on a weekend where teams around them faltered. Sevilla, Real Betis, and Atletico make up the top four while Real Sociedad drop down to 5th. Barcelona sit 7th while Valencia climb up to 8th. Villarreal sit 13th in the table. Advantage very much in Real Madrid’s favour as they look like the most consistent team in Spain. The rest are faltering and Ancelotti is taking it away.

Serie MW 16

Milan beat Salernitana 2-0, Inter beat Roma 0-3, Atalanta beat Napoli 2-3, Lazio beat Sampdoria 1-3, and Juventus beat Genoa 2-0. Milan got top of the table by a point as Napoli drop down to 3rd. Inter move up to 2nd while Atalanta remain 4th but create a 7 point gap from 5th placed Juventus. Roma drop down to 7th in the table with yet another loss while Lazio sit 8th in the table. Milan took advantage of the situation along with Inter to bring Napoli back into the race. It’s quite interesting in Italy at the moment while Roma and Mourinho continue to struggle as well.

Bundesliga MW 14

Union Berlin beat Leipzig 2-1 which turned out to be Jesse Marsch’s last game in charge of Leipzig as he was sacked. Hoffenheim beat Frankfurt 3-2, Leverkusen beat Furth 7-1, Mainz beat Wolfsburg 3-0, Bayern beat Dortmund 2-3, and Freiburg beat Monchengladbach 0-6. Bayern go 4 points clear of Dortmund who sit 2nd while Leverkusen and Freiburg make up the top four. Hoffenheim sit 5th in the table while Wolfsburg sit 8th and Leipzig sit 11th. Monchengladbach sit 13th in the table. Bayern take advantage in Germany and one would think that it is now in their hands to increase that gap which they probably will do. The rest are now playing catch up once again.

Ligue MW 17

Brest beat Marseille 1-2, Lille beat Troyes 2-1, PSG drew with Lens 1-1, Monaco beat Metz 4-0, and Lyon drew with Bordeaux 2-2. PSG reman 11 points clear at the top of the table with Rennes, Marseille and Nice making up the top four. Monaco move up to 7th with the win while Lille and Lyon sit 11th and 12th. Ligue 1 is very much a foregone conclusion but it will be interesting to see who makes top four.
